What would happen if we caved in to the energy eco-nazis?

I.E., what if Atlas Shrugged and we gave the environmentalists EXACTLY what they want and all energy produced by fossil fuels suddenly ceased to exist? This linked article explains what would happen.

The government would be a hero for saving us from the greedy capitalists. Unfortunately prices would have to double to discourage use and to fund environmentally pure means of production.

I thought it was purely capitalist greed that presently drives us to consume evil environment destroying fossil fuels. And that the capitalist hating left is going to be our savior by taking us away from the evil by necessarily skyrocketing the prices of fossil fuels. Can we recognize the government as our savior if they burn both ends of the candle stick? I.E, are they both our savior for destroying fossil fuels and then for subsequently restoring them to full use? Is this a scenario where only the government can win? Almost sounds like Anti-Christ logic.
