Purchased a home with an EFM A520W in the basement

That's an old unit. The stoker was built/sold in Feb. 1959. I'd say that it hasn't been run on coal for awhile because there is no access to the ash pan. Somebody retrofitted an oil burner into the old firedoor. There may be nothing behind the door and if it's being run on oil, it might even be filled in with sand or something.

I will just have to wait to break it open in a few months when we dismantle it. I will ask the plumbers to separate the two halves.

If it has no pot, the case would make one heck of a BBQ smoker for ribs.

I will keep everyone posted.

You better have a few plumbers. The top half alone is 800# or more.

Thanks to StokerMan, you now know the value is not what others proposed. I just saw the photo-bucket pics and was surprised to see the burner hanging off the observation door. A first for me. I have seen plenty through the base...with firebrick in the base. All that glitters just might not be gold. This forum sure gets you answers to your questions....QUICKLY!

-2 outside and the wind has diminished.....I'm 'done' for today.

New gas furnace is going in this week. The 520 AW is now for sale. PM me for details if interested. I will be updating with a new post with pictures in the FS section. Thanks GB.

Hi everyone.

We uninstalled the unit today, and I removed the oil burner. The unit does not contain the coal pot. My plumber, who is also an EFM dealer, said the unit is in good shape mech. speaking and that it contains many usuable parts to part out or for a re-build to its former coal burning glory.

We had to cut up and remove the oil tank, because it would not fit through the steps and door leading to the outside. The boiler will need to be dismantled to be removed.

New post will appear in the for sale section.

Good news. In the chamber where the oil gun was hanging, I was able to break through a styrofoam like material, and the coal pot (cone) is still in the boiler...it actually still had coal in it. Please PM me with your email address and I will send you pictures. Thanks.
