The double door is for two purposes. It is to remain closed while the stove is running to prevent smoke spillage into the house during loading. Many of these stoves had a magazine when new so the top door wasn't that relevant in that case since you re fuel the stove from the top.
The second purpose is to give one easy access to the inside of the stove for cleaning. It makes cleaning out the stove a thousand times easier.
