February 2013 Coal Consumption

February 2013 Coal Consumption

PostBy: lsayre On: Fri Feb 15, 2013 6:53 pm

I'm getting this one started a bit early. My early projection (target) for overall February coal consumption is 1,580 lbs. I've burned 872 lbs. to date for the month. It looks like the mean temperature for the entire month February 2013 in these parts of Ohio will be in the range of 25.5 degrees. January 2013 was 27.45 degrees for the mean, so February is actually going to be a bit colder overall. Currently burning at a rate of just about 1.45 lbs. per HDD for the month.

Last year the mean temperature in these parts for the month of February was a whopping 34.9 degrees, so this year we are a bit more than 9 degrees colder per day for February vs. last year.

The historical long term mean February temperature for the Wadsworth/Medina area of Ohio is 28 degrees, so for this month we are actually a couple degrees colder than the norm around here. Must be the global warming.

Update: Correcting my "to date" coal burned for the month to 872 lbs.

I just topped off and completed February with 1,595 lbs. burned for the month.

The mean temperature for the entire month of February here was 25.64 degrees. HDD's = 1,102. That comes to 1.45 lbs. per HDD for the month.

Cumulative for the coldest 3 months is now:

December = 1.44 lbs./HDD
January = 1.46 lbs./HDD
February = 1.45 lbs/HDD

Total = 6,465 lbs. of coal burned since September 29th.

1280 lbs. heating 2200 sq. ft. 1100 sq. ft. @ 75* average and the 1100 sq. ft. basement @ 60* average. I am some what amazed how good the stove runs and how nice the coal burns the colder it is. We had a week where the temps never got past the single digits and most of the nights were 10 to 20 degrees below zero so I burned more than normal, other than that I am a bag a day. I noticed the oil tank gauge hasn't moved in 4 months!

You never know around here, but I'm liking the forecast. Hope to get out of march under 1000 lbs.
then I'm sailing away at 350 a month till November!

Thanks Larry , I am heating 1200 sq. ft. to 72 plus an unfinished basement to 65 or so in a house I built in 89 that is in an open area and pretty well insulated, 6 inch walls good doors etc . etc. . We do have 2 big picture windows . I say pretty well insulated due to the fact I used double pane anderson windows which I am not happy with at all .

I live in northern Me. so it does get pretty cold here at times for sure . We did have a cold spell for over a week that was the coldest we have had here in a few years and the 110 did keep up but ran steady to do so . I am sure with the new fan that will be a piece of cake in the future .

We don't use lots of DHW as for most of the time there is just the two of us here at the house during the winter months . I am very happy with the 110 and very glad I switched over to coal after burning wood for so many years . I was hopeing we wouldn't use much more then 4 ton of coal for the winter months and that seems to be a reasonable figure for this year at least .
