Coal supplyer in SE CT

PostBy: ddahlgren On: Sat Feb 23, 2013 9:43 am

Who and how much? Other than Preston Trading Post I have not found anyone. I am also looking for a decent used hand fired stove. I am just tired of the short burn times and constant atten for a small wood stove, it becomes an all consuming project when it is below freezing.

Southeast doesn't offer much of what your after, but you are luckly to live in and next to the countries smallest states.
Not sure exactly where you live but In RI there is Cranston Coal Co. ( he used to have a some old handfired stuff hanging around)
In Ashford Ct. there is Mainline Heating and like mentioned above BT Enterprises in Bristol Ct. but I don't think you'll find a stove there ( I get my coal delivered from BT, great prices and service IMO).

Craigslist will prolly yeild so Hand fired stoves.

Stay away from Preston Trading Post...bunch of yahoos IMO, and they don't know "squat" about Coal.

Thanks for the info about Cranston Coal. I live in Mystic about 5 miles from the RI borber right off I-95 so 30 minutes to Cranston if the middle of the day and no rush hour traffic. Preston Trading Post was the first internet hit that came up with a phone number and a person that answered the phone. They sell Hitzer stoves though have no idea for how much as they would not quote over the phone but said their coal stoves sell for between 1000 and 1400 so that part seemed reasonable unless the nuber tossed out to later sell me me up to much more. The only problem whith a used one off of Cragslist I see is people around here do not sell anything until it is close to worthless and not very good at disclosing what is broken or missing. They will happily pass off 10 bucks of scrpe iron as a 400 buck stove then shrug when you realize it is a pile of junk that can not be fixed. At least with new I stand the chance of getting a working safe stove with some sort of a warrantee to at least the thing is complete. Preston Trading suggested Hitzer as a good stove and the reviews on the net seemed pretty good. Their model 254 fits where my small woodstove is has a top flue and the same size 6 inch pipe. If anyone knows what a Hitzer is going for at a fair price that might be helpful. I do not know enough about coal stoves to know if I looked at a used one if it was all there or safe to use. Wood stoves seem very simple at least the one I have. I air damper a brick lined fire box and secondary air tube.

I currently attempt to burn 2 cords of wood a year as this is my first year and have to say the yard and basement is a mess with bark and wood stacked everywhere and very time consuming to the point of distraction. It is impossible to buy seasoned wood and I only have 1/3 acre and at 61 with a bad back cutting and stacking my own for 2 weeks would end up me in bed for a month to heal up so a non-player. Add a bunch of gear needed to do that along with a truck i might as well buy the oil and spare the pain and expense. I have recieved partially seasoned wood that needs another year to actually be seasoned that it is silly so needs to be resplit and let sit for another week indoors to get dry enough to burn even though barely ready at 20% moisture so has to be burned hot and fast. I want some time back and willing to pay a bit more for coal and being warm hopefully only tending the stove 2 or 3 times a day.

I will call Cranston Coal today if anyone has an idea as to a fair price for coal in SE CT and if a Hitzer 254 is a decent stove that would be very helpful

As an update it looks like the going rate for coal after calling a few places is 350 a ton bagged and 300 bulk with delivery extra and a large minimum purchase. They were suggesting a stove with a thermostst and auto feed hopper as the way to go and when I asked about not having power they said if I catch it fairly quick i can get it going without losing the fire but if off for maore than a few minutes and later comes on the auto feed will fill the stove and ash pan with coal. Seems like a strong selling point for hand fired as I rather come home to a cold house than a mess to deal with.

Welcome ddahlgren,

I also get my coal from B T Enterprises but I only live about ten minutes from there.

I'm going to be 71 this year and have used only hand fired stoves for many years. I have a bad back and still use a hand fired stove. In my opinion hand fired is the only way to go.
When the power goes out I have no worries about keeping warm. My stove has a blower but when I lose power I just run it a little hotter.
I shake and load my stove once a day unless it gets real cold and then I switch to twice a day.
Hitzer makes some nice hand fired stoves and depending on the model you can get one with or without a hopper. Hoppers are a nice feature. Blowers also are a nice feature.
Stove size depends on the area you are trying to heat.

I was looking at this stove as it fits the area I have for it and flue size matches up.
http://www.hitzer.com/products/stove/Model-254-Stove/

Do you think would go a whole day with any input from me or twice a day. Our average winter day is 30 to 40 during the day and 20 at night. This is also a much higher max BTU than my wood stove that can easily heat to 70's on a colder day and 80' on a typical day.

I was quoted 1389 + tax for the Hitzer 254 by a local dealer

I live up in Norwichtown and get my coal from Fleming's Feed in Preston. Its not a great price, but I dont have to drive to Hartford either. They have pea bagged 50lbs@8.99 or 340 a ton. Im looking at a place in Charleston RI that has Bulk Pea for 280 a ton, but thats for next heating season.
