Your first comment I don't even know where to start with. Was I implying that they are "right" and everyone else is "wrong"?? NO. Did you even think to ask the question: WHY are they the only network reporting this??? Why no story on Huff Po? Al Jazzera? CNN? NYT? NBC? ABC? CBS???? WHY?????? Maybe they agree with the agenda?? Every state is full of godless islamic commies - it's called: THE BOARD OF EDUCATION. Progressives have OWNED education for a LONG, LONG time. We're feeling the repercussions of that fact right now, in case you haven't noticed how FANTASTIC the economy is. And before you go and blame Bush, I WILL. Progressives in ANY party are NO GOOD for the nation.

Every single economic problem we face today is the DIRECT result of progressive policies.

Who is responsible for a childs education? not the state, the parents. Laws require a PUBLIC education be available to all children. As far as what a teachers/schools cirriculum is for that class/school is, if its LAw to to be Publicly educate, the freedom of informatio law requires all cirriculum be available also. So if you are a parent and want to know the specific books, references, class materials,plans are go and get them from the school. They more than likely will refuse, but thats becuse they think your challeneging thier"authority". After all now, your paying for that PUBLIC education in state school/federal taxes.

In other words, be involved by asking the school directly yourself, as well as your child. Specifically if theres something they are being taught that they (child) beleive or know not to be correct by what you have taught them from your own knowledge or life learnings.

Every state is different but as far as whats taught I think it is more up to local or district school boards. PTAs & parents actually going to school board meetings would help, I still find it funny how many want to do away with public schools because they don't work while most of them are products of those schools. Now your admitting that you are either less educated or that the school system somewhere between yourself & children has changed for the worse. Why not put some time & effort into reversing that trend to once again be worthy instead of just pulling out, you are still going to be paying for a system that doesn't work if you yourself don't do something to fix the system.

The other side of the coin is the people trying to "improve" the schools all seem to be products of them.

Maybe the "everyone gets a trophy" generation has delusions of grandeur and thinks they are far superior to the system that vomited them into adulthood?

For the record Sam, when was your last personal interaction with the public school system? When did you have to sit with your child and reinforce the convoluted teaching they received all day?

For the record (didn't know anyone was keeping one) my kids got out of high school many moons ago but while there I missed very few board meeting, never missed a parents-teachers day that I recall & always let my feelings be known. Also voiced my opinion & dealings in the local editorials at election time, schools boards are elected in Pa..

The Warwick(RI) Public School system. It was a joke then, and since now my children were involved with it, I got to see how much worse it had become.

Unless you have had to recently sit in all those meetings, my wife was VP of the PTA, and have had to attend conferences with teachers where they flat lie to your face, then I would suggest you don't have a firm grasp of how bad things have become.

And it's not a figment of my imagination, nor is it unique to this area.

“Unemployable.” It was the word State Education Commissioner Deborah Gist used on WPRO’s John DePetro show used when talking about Rhode Island’s high school graduates -- though Gist attributed the word to the Rhode Island Manufacturers Association (RIMA).

Gist said Thursday morning that when she met with members of RIMA Wednesday, they said the skill sets of Rhode Island high school grads were so poor that they couldn’t place them into jobs that normally don’t require a college education.

But Bill McCourt, Executive Director of the Rhode Island Manufacturers Association, said “unemployable is a strong word.”

“Challenging definitely,” McCourt told WPRO Thursday.

Jpete, that all well might be but what does it have to do with my suggestion to fix rather than cut & run since you have to pay school tax anyhow, I never said the system isn't flawed & that it did work at some point.

You think pouring ever increasing amounts of money into a problem will result in the next dollar fixing everything.

Tell you what. You're right. At some point, the public schools did a fine job. Now let's go back to the the last level of funding that worked.

Seems OK to me but kindly point out where I ever said to increase funding, it's highly expensive as it is & that cost goes up if you go private but even if you home school it doesn't decrease if it's done the same as Pa. on property value.

How does a liberal "reform" something? Historically, he throws more money at it. So your calls for "fixing" the system=$$$ whether you intended it or not.

And why is that liberals always go about fixing things without realizing they are the ones that messed it up to begin with?
