I would've bitched at the neighbor. BUT...on the other side I do see the town's reasoning for the citation. He isn't being cited for the flag, but the pole. I do have a problem with the citation as well. Instead of citing the guy what they should've done was sent an inspector over. He's got 30 days. Send the inspector over, have it looked over and if it's not to code have it fixed. I also find it hard to believe that it cost $1k to pull a permit for a residential flag pole.

No, before anyone says, 'Well, they can't just do that.', bullshit. I had my septic system done in 2011. It has a pump, which meant I needed a permit for the electric. The electrician doing the work was upset because I gave him a hard time. He turned around and threw me under the bus to the town because I didn't pull a permit for my generator panel which he wanted to tie into. He told me right to my face after the fact that I was going to get a fine and then made to pull a permit. He was in his glory because since he was on site he was automatically going to perform the repairs to the generator panel and then bend me over for the cost. Well, to his horror when the town showed up they looked at the generator panel and asked me about it directly. I was upfront with them, told them I did all the electrical work and that I followed NFPA70 2008 (NEC 2008). I was given an approval for electric sticker right on the spot. I didn't get a fine, I didn't have to pull a permit. Because I did it up to code the town was happy with it. The electrician that threw me under the bus was pissed.

The town that fined the vet for his flagpole should've looked at it first instead of issuing a fine.

If I were him I would be going to the town meetings & see if I couldn't get it resolved there. There seems to always be more of a story behind the headlines, now I'm wondering just how big the flag pole is & if the permit is required for all sizes.

The way I read the permit part is because he has to go through a third party it will likely cost up to a grand, cost of the permit plus what the third party will charge to do the paperwork. Not that the permit it's self is that much. Maybe a fellow vet contractor in the area would do it for cost. Man as bad as the Peoples Republic of Maryland is I submitted my own house plans drawn by myself and did my own paperwork and received my permit without having to go through a contractor. What a ripoff they have going there.

Fred! You makin' stuff up agin? Readin' betwixt the lines? Weren't no Mehicans in that story! Tain't illegal to fly the Mehican flag, neither, long as you don't fly it higher than the US flag. Good thing, too, or we'd have to lock up all them folks with 10 little flagpoles on they pickup trucks flyin' 10 little Confederate flags. :!: Jest got to have a legal flagpole, is all, one certified not to fall over into the neighbor's yard and kill the cat or the grandkids!

Flyer, that second story sounds like there is a lot more to it as well. Maybe that's why some resist the selling of guns with background checks, seems he sold his the day after this happened, he still plans on running for re-election but what does it have to do with local ordinances & flags?

I just saw the link while reading the article on that site. Bloomberg and his cronies have no respect for the flag either and its spreading.

Step 1: Buy used flagpole.

Step 2: plant it and be glad the concrete truck pouring a foundation had some extra concrete:

Total cost $200 if you don't want to count the 4 hours to dig the dam hole, the ground here is half rock...

Having said that I don't like articles like this. This isn't about the flag, it's about ridiculous zoning ordinances.
