The greatest danger in government is arbitrary authority. Some ignorant government lout gets a chance to flex his muscles and common sense goes out the window. As an animal lover I feel for the bear but reality can be harsh.

I believe the name "Massachusetts" is the Indian word for "arbitrary authority". ;)

Well, at least since the Kennedy family took up residence here ....

If it helps anything, the firearm discharge law in question specifically allows the "lawful defense of life and property" - https://www.malegislature.gov/Laws/Gene ... Section12e . I'm not a gun or legal expert, but that doesn't sound unreasonable to me. Even if you leave out the bear, the problem in this case seems to be that the guy planned ahead of time to defend himself by discharging an unlicensed weapon near his neighbors. I don't think MA is the only state that discourages that kind of thing, and I don't think it's "arbitrary". Not long ago in western MA a gang member was acquitted of murder after he killed a local resident on the street in a city neighborhood. The evidence persuaded the jury that the shooter reasonably was in fear for his own life (the victim was trying to run the shooter over with a car); the shooter only did time because the weapon was unlicensed. To me, it would be arbitrary if the bear guy wasn't held accountable to the same basic standard. I'm not saying he should do time, but giving him a free pass doesn't sound right either.

While he’s claiming the killing was self-defense, Ahlstrand is being charged, according to the outlet, with illegally killing a bear, illegally baiting a bear, illegal possession of a firearm and failing to secure a weapon. The man is speaking out against the charges, claiming that he’s being unfairly labeled by authorities.

I don't dispute the illegal possession, and MAYBE failing to secure (that's a slippery slope in this state) ... but the guy was being CHASED while filling his BIRD feeder! I'd have done the same, licensed or not. I'd rather be in court than mauled by a bear on my own property. The baiting charge is typical MA bullshit - he was feeding birds for cripe sakes.

How can it be legal to defend yourself and illegal to do it? How do you argue with crazy?

I don't think anyone is saying it's illegal to defend yourself, or even your property. The guy discharged an unlicensed weapon in a neighborhood, and the people who investigated the incident apparently concluded that the guy may have taken an active role in causing the incident to occur as it did. I'm not saying he did or he didn't, but it gets to be a gray area if a person claims defense when they - hypothetically - were trying to kill a nuisance bear in a neighborhood with an unlicensed weapon and without having made any attempt to get the bear relocated, etc. As with the gang guy, sometimes it has to go to court.

If that's the case, I'd still take any one of those states over MA any day of the week! :D

Anyway .... what I want to know is, why was the guy unlicensed? He obviously was licensed at some point .... but why not now? Could it be the bureaucracy that is this state delaying his license renewal as they've done to just about everyone I know? That's VERY possible. Of course, you'll never hear that part of the story get out there ...

The moonbat-owned T&G finally picked up the story today. They started out with ... "A man who told cops he was a hero for saving the neighborhood ..." . Way to report the facts. And they wonder why I, and THOUSANDS of others cancelled our subscriptions to that roll of toilet paper ...
