Moores Bros Stove

Moores Bros Stove

PostBy: jimg On: Fri Apr 12, 2013 3:00 pm

I may have an opportunity to purchase this stove but have little idea what it is worth, other than what someone will pay for it. I've only seen a few restored for sale and they are quite pricey. This one is at a public sale and I won't be able to get more pictures or a closer inspection before then.
The condition looks rough to me and it seems like the ash door may be broken off, though in one picture it seems to be on. Also I don't know if there are additional parts not shown. From what I have read here this looks to be a desirable stove, but maybe on the difficult/expensive side to restore. This would be for my personal use, not resale.

Thanks in advance for any info/guidance.

Jim

There should be a base that it would sit on and a grille/register that sits on top collar for heated air outlet...not in picture.

The fire-pot and grate condition is very important.

It would clean up real well with some media blasting, paint or polish and some nickle plating. :)

Looks to be for anthracite, since no over the fire air.

Jim, these stoves are very nice but for the condition of this particular one, it's difficult to tell you if it's a deal or a steal! From a recognized antique stoves store you can trust some photos but from an auction sale it could be an other thing. From what we can see on the photo, the price Should be very low and again you would take a chance on this one if no more photos are available than these ones, showing just a little of it, maybe done intentionally???
If you read the Stovehospital site, you can read that some stoves are in a too bad condition to be restored. If many parts are missing or cracked...it could be a very hard and pricey hobby. I got 2 restored stoves and had to put many hours on them plus the $$$$$$$nickel.

Got it, thanks, I will have the opportunity to see it on the day of the sale and will at least check the firebox and other main components for soundness. I will keep the condition and restoration costs very much in mind if I do bid on this.

Jim, I forgot this but maybe you already went there?
Write Moores Stoves in right top corner window and you will see many Moores stoves. Once complete and restored these stoves are very nice. Plus you will find a lot of infos about them.
Good luck.

McGiever got this one pegged... their is no ash door here (there is not even the ash housing to mount an ash door if you had it  ), besides that it has a crack in the top casting (near the flu wear it gets hot) and the top load casting clearly has a big chunk missing (this is scrape value), we have not even got to see the inside but unless they have the base its not worth concidering unless your a metal scraper or need parts for an exsisting one that you already have.

This is a Moore's Circulator. The Moore's 401B, is the top of the line model. It is a large stove with the double heating option. These are excellent stoves, direct draft and can burn Bituminous well.

I would, however; pass on this one. Just take my advice. You will spend years and tears trying to put this thing back in order. Moore's stoves are very, very common as they sold them in the tens of thousands. You can find one that is complete and serviceable with a little patience and looking.

One of these Moores Bros Stoves is currently relisted at ebay for it's second time, it is a real show-piece.
And it is in my neck of the woods. :) Anybody need a delivery to the Meet N Greet?

Very nice one. Just too bad we can't have more inside of the stove photos, that alone says that the stove was for collectors, non-using it for serious heating.
$2,700, ???????? is it restored or just clean looking? Anyways, it looks better than the previous one :)
Very important before you buy it: have a good look at the dog on the right side of the stove and try to read in its eyes :o
