It is funny, I live not far from this guy and yet the media is reporting "The North Pond Hermit is Finally Captured", though before that day NOTHING was ever said about there being a wild burglar on the rampage. The media is simply making something out of nothing!!
But here is the thing; in my opinion, if you have to steal from others in order to live out your lifestyle, you should be caught and prosecuted. Yes a pile on welfare today do the same thing, but just because many get away with it, does not mean this guy should. Sure many of the people he stole from did not even know they were robbed, and many were wealthy camp owners from out of state, but still it was not his to take, and the State of Maine has an obligation to prosecute him.
This man is gaining a following, but only because so many people out there are selfish cowards like him. There is not a married man alive who has had children who has not wished he could just get away from it all and live as he wished; but it is called responsibility and taking care of our wives and children. It even says in the bible to "be in this world, and not of this world", meaning to belong, contribute and get along, but to be different and have a moral, high standard within you. No where does it say to buck the system and it clearly states not to steal.
It is ironic that the tax payers of Maine pay far more in costs for those who steal off the welfare system which surpasses by far more then then this man ever stole, and that his incarceration to date has probably cost more then the total value of what he stole in all of his 1000+ burglaries, but just because he lived in a tent in the woods, and lived under the civilization radar does not mean he was not a petty, thieving criminal worthy of prosecution. The Maine State Prison in Warren was made for just such a person as this; a person who clearly cannot be free in society because he cannot live without illegally obtaining the items he needs to live on, without stealing it from those who work hard to pay for it. I hope he enjoys his 6 x 10 foot cell because he clearly cannot handle freedom with responsibility and must be removed from society and monitored closely. Hopefully when his specified time period of isolation is up, he will seek some of the Christian Ministries that are available in prison, learn from his mistakes and be a better person for it. That was after all, the whole reason the Quakers started the concept of prison and jail.
And yes, I pray for this man often because really getting right with God is really in the best interest of himself and the tax payers and citizens of Maine.
