I had foot surgery on Thursday, and since we're still relying on the black diamonds to keep the chill out of the house; my LW is tending the stove. It started with "let it go out and turn the oil back on" and has now progressed to a routine with a sense of satisfaction.

It's a lucky thing that it's idling and doesn't take multiple hods to fill it, and emptying only happens every other day so it's more tolerable. The resentment has disappeared and been replaced by a bit of pride and interest in how it works.

For those 'FEW' out there with roommates who love the warmth but hate the dust, I don't suggest a bunionectomy; but for me it worked!

You're a lucky, lucky man!!

I wish my wife was like that. When I ask mine to tend the stove I get the, 'I'm scared. I'm going to do it wrong and break it.', and when she does do it she has to call me 100 times to get walked through the process. My son whom is nearing 14 won't even touch it. Hell, I can barely get him to bring coal in and empty out the ash can once it's full. He won't take the ashes out of the stove, citing and I quote, 'It's too heavy for me to carry.' I even get that quote when he brings coal in the house, 'It's too heavy. I'm only doing one bag.' My three year old daughter on the other hand is always, like, 'Daddy, can I help? I wanna do it.' and she sits on my lap when I'm shaking the stove down and she puts her hand on the handle, and she helps me scoop coal into the hod and she helps me pour it in the hopper. Maybe, there's still some hope for someone else in my house to tend the beast when I can't.

Yes, I guess I am lucky. Normally she's not receptive to my 'suggestions' but she's gone from asking in what sequence to open/close the MPD/air shutter/front door to minimize the smell; to working around minor puffbacks after shaking/emptying.

I didn't even have to mention 'for better or worse' from 41 years ago.

Lucky, indeed!

I have my female unit trained on how to adjust the primary combustion air to control heat output. Other than that I try to keep her out of the coal furnace lol. There has been incidences of the ash pan door left open in the past which ends with a a panicking phone call and a flue pipe temp around 900 degrees because something smelled hot in the basement hahaha.

A well-deserved update-I was awakened to the symphony of shaking and loading the hopper this morning. And an apology-she tried to do it quietly. I'm sorry if I'm bragging, but I really appreciate her efforts. Spot on-no chill in the house and she gets it. There is hope out there gentlemen.

"A well-tended stove is better than great sex anyday"

A serious THANK YOU to my LW!

Hey Roundbadge. This sort of claim requires pictures. We love pics around here. Don't we gang?

Pics??? You been sniffin' that zinc dust too long up there! There's a fine line down here between showing appreciation (leaving well enough alone) and going overboard (pics of shake 'n fill).

I told her that I posted that she was tending the stove, and what a great job she was doing. But-you know that deep down feeling that no matter how sincere you are, they think you're goofing on them?

Well, that's where we're at. Posing for pictures would only push that benefit of the doubt to the negative side. Know what I mean?

She's leaving for a week in Kentucky with a couple friends, and she spent today stocking up the vittles for me. It's been a great week and a half of her waiting on me so I can heal, now I'm on my own. I'll have to get my own beer now...

Gosh.... I hate to wish bunions on anyone, but it seems .... Naaaa....let's not go there. LOL

I'm pretty sure my wife can keep the AA running if I kick the bucket....but sadly I'll have to actually do so to be sure. :)
