Who would have thought the Gestapo is alive and well?

The police also have the wrong guns. Over 200 rounds and one still walks away. They should give them shotguns.

You seem to be forgetting that the brothers had connections to this neighborhood. Do you expect the law enforcement people to play cards at the curb waiting for an invitation to visit specific houses? They apparently had a reason to be concerned about this one. They knocked, and your hearing must be better than mine if you can hear anyone say no to the search. You don't like civilians being asked to keep their hands on their heads when outside? Would you rather have innocent civilians or law enforcement people get killed in case one of the people coming out is the suspect or an accomplice?

If anyone from Watertown or other lockdown areas has complaints about the way the searches were conducted, I'm all ears, and I'm sure we'll hear about it. If people from out of state try to use Youtube clips to make some case - without words - that the people who experienced this aren't willing to make, it sure seems like it's for some other agenda.

All I can say is-- it would take a real A-hole to complain about LE's methods in this situation. If I were to continue on this topic, I would have to move to Flame Suit Central  :(

If we MUST forfeit our 4A and 5A protection in the event of an "emergency", do we really have them at all?

If your reference to 5A relates to the interrogation of the suspect without counsel, I agree with you. For better or worse, this guy is a citizen, and he should be treated as one. If you want due process for yourself, make sure this guy gets it.

I share your concern about 4A but to me it's not clear 4A has been or must be sacrificed here. Obviously there may be tough calls - e.g., a neighbor reports that someone who looks like the suspect has entered a nearby house. I'd like to hear more from people in the lockdown areas before reaching a conclusion about 4A.

You live close Jpete, why didn't you just go over there while this was in full swing & straighten LE out? I heard & saw the people that live there cheering & thanking LE as they were leaving, they were there & directly involved & I still haven't heard anything from them, except praise that is. I guess maybe LE should take a lesson from all the experience here & just go home & protect what's theirs because they are the only ones that matter.

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

Most people don't know their rights or just flat don't care. The government frightens them with a boogey man under every bed and they gladly roll over.

The search for one 19 year old kid was larger than the search for Lee Harvey Oswald and produced absolutely ZERO.

It was a random home owner, OUTSIDE the search area that found him after martial law was lifted.

Sh!t, the cops could have come searched my house and been just as effective.

And the media spins it as a triumph of the police over the bad guys and the pin heads eat it up.

Pathetic.

I am torn over this. Of course, I would have complied with a search as it is ridiculous to make a situation worse because a SWAT team wants to search your house, and everyone around you, without a warrant. However, I think the people in the effected area were at least watching TV or had internet access and knew exactly what was going on. They knew they were searching house to house, and they were instructed keep their doors locked and only open them for LEO. I would have kept an eye out for them, and as they came to my house I would have instructed my family to go out the door, one at a time, with their hands on their heads. I don't think they were busting people for anything they shouldn't have had and it looked like the searches were quick and over with. From the sounds of things, it was almost a Marshal Law situation, so I wonder if they even technically need a warrant to search door to door? It isn't like they were just searching, they had an agenda and a person they were looking for. I am sure they overlooked a lot of "illegal" things because they had their sights on the bigger picture. I didn't see any video of home owners being arrested...did anyone else?

On the other hand, I don't want our government thinking they can just use an emergency, real or fabricated, to justify searching my house without a warrant. It also shows you just how quick the government can take over an area and how most will comply with all orders given...

I was talking about the people in Watertown.

As for your other commentary, you're always welcome to exercise your First Amendment rights, and come to the Boston Common to rag on LE efforts. Bring a bullhorn so everyone can hear you.

I agree this would be a concern if this was happening with any regularity, or if there was a history of problems with uses against citizens of information or evidence that was improperly obtained. The 4th Amendment protects against unreasonable searches; I think in this case compliance was high or universal because the search was believed by those affected to be reasonable under the circumstances.
