Internet sales tax passes the Senate 70 to 24

But once again therein lies the problem. Per the Constitution all bills pertaining to revenue must originate within the House of Representatives.

As far as the bill itself goes there is two very good arguments from both sides. The online retailers are not on a level playing field with local stores. O the other hand if you're just a small online retailer you're going to have a tsunami of paperwork involved with this. 50 new taxing districts all with their own rules, regulations and percentage of tax....

Haven't looked, are they allowing the local sales tax too?

I thought it only pertained to States Sales taxes, but I could be wrong.

I figure this senate is 99.9% progressive, so ... no surprise here. Taxes are the answer to all the world's ills.

This is going to be nightmare for smaller online retailers, last I heard any company with more than 1 million in sales. That may sound like a lot but not really, that's a company with handful of people.

What these dummies cannot grasp is the concept of unintended consequences.

Now all large retailers will lose 90% of their business ... and eventually become small retailers .... while the small retailer's business explodes ... and then they become large ....... and the cycle continues forever.

This tax will be collected in the state the consumer resides, if there is no sales tax in that state then only the residents of that state won't be paying the sales tax.

Legally here in PA and most other states you are supposed to pay that sales tax, they have a form for remitting it to the state but there is no way to enforce it.

If something close to half of the Senate Republicans voted yes, then it should also breeze through the House without much fanfare.

This is a terrible, terrible thing. It's not going to help brick-n-mortar stores, it will only hurt online sales and make sellers lives more difficult -also it will bring in more revenue to continue feeding the beast. Nothing about this is good.

It might for high dollar purchases, e.g. a computer.

Keep in mind this isn't a new tax, it's enforcement of existing taxes.

But since it originated in the Senate, and it involves revenue, it should be null and void. The Supreme Court has an obligation to toss it out.

Delaware, the home of tax free shopping! Some people that used to sell e-bay will try more local things with Craiglists. Late night phone calls and meeting in dark alleys to score your next purchase. What is our country turning us into?

I'm surprised this hasn't been done already. I do see both sides of the argument but I will never agree that new/more taxes of any sort are right when you consider how much money is extorted from all of us through all other forms of taxation.

None of us should be surprised though...Revenue through taxation (basically theft) is one of this govt's top priorities.
