Odd size Brass Fitting..need help!

PostBy: ntp71 On: Sun May 12, 2013 9:21 am

Hello,

I need to find where they sell a brass end cap like the one I have pictured. I have already checked Grainger and Lowes, the problem is it seems like it is an odd size. This guy came off of an old Caloric Gas/Coal stove.

The Hex end is 1/2", and the inside Diameter measures about 5/16". I am not an expert when it comes to different pipe sizes and measurements. I can tell you I have a 1/8" MIP brass nipple that I used as a reference and it is to large for it. So I am guessing it is the next size down.

Thanks

Neal

It might be a flare fitting, they have a different thread and are always used for propane. ;)

If you post a pic of the inside of the cap I can tell you for sure if its a flare cap. Given its a gas unit Id bet it is.

Ask for a .25" f npt x .5 sweat wrought copper fitting adapter at a real plumbing supply house.

Use this exact terminology.

As Cap said a real plumbing, AC or old style hardware store, you have the fitting so it shouldn't be much of a problem.

Thanks all. I called an Appliance repair store today that has been around for quite awhile. They were able to find me what I needed. I will be picking them up this week. If it does not work I will do as you have suggested.

I don't believe it is tapered...here is the male end.

its not a "flared" fitting. it appears to be pipe thread. if ya have a decent tap and die set they usually come with a "thread pitch" gauge..... ya find the one that fits the "teeth" like a glove and that determines its notation.
naturally metric pitch gauges are in sets that are ...... the pipe thread pitch gauges are available if ya get in this pickle again

maybe even sears has em....

it's either 1/8" m npt or 1/4" m npt. Hard for me to determine with nothing else in picture to use as a gauge such as a quarter or tape measure. i am referring to the more recent pic.

Late to the party, lol. The following is only true if you have a small hole in the round end (not hex end) of that fitting.

To me it looks like that is not a regular sort of fitting, it is an adjustable metering orifice for a gas valve on a stove. Don't know how proprietary it may or may not be. We've got a gas Tappan range from the late 40s or early 50s with a similar setup. The tighter onto the valve you get it, the less gas will flow. Ours has a needle on the valve side that is also removable. like this: valve--needle>--orifice hood. They came with different size holes for different flow rates (depending on if you were on natural gas, manufactured gas, or propane; and what BTU/h output the burner was.)

Hope you got what you needed. If not there's an appliance place here in town that probably can get what you need.

Regards
Jacob
