Both companies were in the running to design the engines for our next generation of military vehicles, and both were basing their technology on 2-stroke diesels with 2 pistons per cylinder, no head, and no valves. We wouldn't want the Chinese to get too far behind us militarily now, especially when most of the big shots like Bill Gates and his ilk placed their big bets with loser EcoMotors.
I didn't find any videos for Achates Power that detailed their engine design, but it is apparently quite similar to the EcoMotors version, and you can watch the first minute or so of the first video and the entire second video below to see some details for the EcoMotors engine.
Get this! This technology is old school. In the 1930's the German Junkers military planes were powered by engines based upon this same technology. Then it apparently just faded away, but now its back big time. Perhaps it had something to do with the name?
