Replace oil burner with coal stoker?

Replace oil burner with coal stoker?

PostBy: Inherited Axeman 130 On: Wed Jun 05, 2013 2:56 pm

While I was out of town, my brother-in-law had his friend replace my Mom's old Axeman Anderson 130 coal stoker with a new EFM oil furnace.
His friend, who only deals in oil burners and sells heating oil, said the AA was a dinosaur and had to go.
He also told Mom her annual heating cost would double going from coal to oil.
Here we are a year later and her actual cost was 3 and 1/2 times more with the oil...which she can't afford...And she was always cold in her house.

We are seriously considering having someone tear out the oil furnace and install a refurbished EFM ( or other ) coal stoker.
I will be taking care of coal and ashes, etc. just like before with the AA, so upkeep on her part is not an issue.

Your thoughts?

Such a deal I got for you. I sell heating oil and just happen to also sell oil fired equipment. I'm going to badmouth anything other than oil burners and convince you to get rid of anything else and only buy the oil burning equipment and oil from me.

I'm going to make money hand over fist while you fork it over. I'm not going to tell you that the coal burners operate 200% cheaper than my oil burning equipment. Why would I want to do that because when you find that out you'll go with the cheaper operating costs and kick me to the curb.

Make Sense>????

If 180 gallons of oil equals a ton of coal in heat output, then if that oil costs $700 it means that you would have to pay $200 for a ton of coal delivered for your figures to be accurate.

If coal costs more than that in your area then I would suspect that the oil burner is not burning correctly or the furnace is junk.

Hey I.A.130,
just remember your mom. When you go out of town next time, who will be taking care of the ashes and coal. Or if something happens to you. Make sure you leave a backup. A new oil EFM would do good backup duty. ;)

Scott makes a great point. That EFM oil unit will be very nice if the coal unit needs attention or no one will be available for a week or two to tend the ashes.

I would be pretty pissed at your brother in law for setting this in motion.

How many gallons of oil did your mom burn this past winter?

This is just highway robbery. :nono: I will never go back to oil... EVER. If anything i will install some electric baseboard heaters for a backup if i decide to take a nice vacation in January/February. I feel sorry for you, your family boned you pretty good. Learning's outta this will last a lifetime, i have had a few of these learnings myself so welcome to the club.
