I recently replaced my old XP machine with a new used (refurbished) Dell. The pricks that make Quicken and make sure it becomes obsolete every 2.5 years have finally overloaded the old machine. It ran but it was a bit slow because of not enough RAM. The refurb came with Windows 7 Pro 32 bit installed and a backup copy on DVD. Cost; about $300. If you just want a basic machine I think this is the way to go. I found that a computer running Windows as is from Microsoft is far superior than a new machine from the big guys all bloated up with useless bullshit that just makes the machine suck.
I use nod 32 antivirus, watch where I go on line and only install software that I really need. Quicken, Office, and maybe half a dozen more. It is a very boring computer but I found they work great for years with no issues.

The one I bought from Best Buy back in '04 had all that crap installed. Had this "home entertainment" deal that was supposed to control your entire TV room from music to movies. Never used any of it. What a colossal waste of money! Paid a grand for this piece of *censored* and only got 5 years out of it - and that was JUST the tower!! No monitor, keyboard, speakers, or anything!! Wasn't thinking that day, apparently. :|

The one I have now didn't have any fancy *censored* on it, but it did have Norton antivirus which in and of itself IS a damn virus! Took forever to cut all it's tentacles off my system. This one was a refurb, and was under $400 shipped. It's in the beginning stages of meltdown as I type ...

I'll take this opportunity to give a big *censored* YOU to Bill Gates and his *censored* assed junk computers that bilk us out of all our hard-earned money!!

Smitty, do you use any particular software that requires windows to operate? If all you do is browse the web, something like Mint Linux might work for you...depending on your comfort level of installing an operating system.

I've been using the compressor for years now, just be careful of the moisture.

Funny how that canned air works. It's R134a ... the same refrigerant used in your car's A/C. if a technician releases it into the atmosphere while repairing your car, he's fined $25 LARGE by the EPA. But,it's ok to clean your keyboard with it and vent it directly into your home .....

It's also used as a propellant in my asthma inhalers ..... and causes testicular cancer ... but that's another topic for another day!!

Anyway .... The majority of what I do with a computer is store info, search for info, chat on this fine forum, and buy stuff. Wood n Coal has already talked me into a Mac. Now it's just a matter of finding the $$$ to make that happen. ;)

AND there is a $10k reward for anyone turning in an HVAC technician for releasing anything more than a de minimus amount of refrigerant!
