You have options, however a tile chimney will last the rest of your life, and another 100 years.. do the math....

steckel im a mason get chimney block 16 by 16 inchesan 8 inch flue liners.You mortarblock an sr stack 1 on top of each other .Connect flues with hi temp caulk from hardware stoor .Fill any voids around flues with vermiculite .Im a mason 40 plus years P M me an will answer any questions .Jack

As stated---you can't beat a block chimney if you can swing it.

thanks to all for the replies ... I know masonry is best, but seems to be a lot of extra work .. I assume you have to pour a footer, that means excavation alongside the building .. also, now I will have to modify the soffit, etc where the chimney goes along the building .. really can only put it on the gable ends or I will have to mess with the gutters, etc.. not real worried if it lasts 100 yrs after im gone ... that will be the next guy's problem. Just looking at cost here ... also, since I am running in the summer for DHW, will I get a better draft with masonry vs. galv pipe ?? that may make the choice easier....

Either, or will work just fine my friend. My wood burning beast in the back has a mason external chimney & my Hitzer 50-93 has a pipe, (center of house) as you described your projected set up ( single black pipe to ceiling & double wall from there up, with cap)--and both work just fine & are equally efficient.

-my wood stove pipe is 8" at the stove top--reduced to 6" & block is 16X16 block w/ 8" tile--8" outlet reduced to 6" coming out of the wood stove

Bsteckel. If your looking for a cheap mason who does quality work, I know that person. Had mason chimney done last year, if I remember correctly it's 24ft. Complete price of $700, note without footer.. Your welcome to swing by and check the quality, I live in Jackson Twp, maybe 20 min ride for you.

thanks for the offer, Wiz .. I am actually closer .. I live in Effort. What did you do for a footer for your masnonry chimney ?? could they put one up inside the building .. using the 5" slab for the base ?? I know nothing about masonry

Chimney is sitting in the corner of garage and anchor on two sides into block walls. Floor slap is 7 in thick, having chimney in corner it's using existing footers from garage walls. He'll need to look at it. Using anchors it's taking some of the weight load of the floor he told me. Slap is still perfect no cracks anywhere. Mason I use is Mike Wallingford he also lives in Jackson Twp. Price included putting hole in roof, flashing,clean out door, materials, labor.. Half the cost that another person quoted.

sounds like a good deal .. I have heard of the Wallingfords before ... will have to give them a call. Not sure if I can even put a black or galvanized chimney in for that amount .. seems like the double wall stuff gets expensive pretty quick. I only have a slab .. no footer or block to attach to .. just metal walls.

if you can find number let me know...I price ss and price was crazy. Decide not to do ss thanks to members telling me masonry was the way to go. He might pin another slap onto the original slap to spread out the weight of chimney.
