is this that Harmony Coal I always hear the "hubbub" about? I thought Harmony closed? Do several companies use or have rights to the Mammoth mine?

It seems that several companies are mining the Mammoth. But only Harmony was mining underground.

MAMMOTH VEIN...not mine. :)

That vein is many, many square miles in size. Many different mines scattered over it.

Harmony Mine has closed. Mallard is selling coal trucked in from some distant part of the Mammoth Vein and is using the Bins and scale-house where Harmony was once sold...there is no NEW HARMONY.

The now-closed UAE Harmony mine was pulling coal from the Lykens No 2 vein, not the mammoth. Looking at a document published by Penn State in 1963, it appears that the Lykens No 2 vein in that area is about 1100 feet underground, and is the second deepest seam there.

Seems to have alot more ash than I remember with uae. Good heat output. But if my next load is as dirty as this one was(excessive fines). I'll find somewhere else. Got a mixture of nut/stove and was loaded with fines. Had to rinse the bed of my truck out after putting it in the bin and my driveway looked like the coal yards, black and wet.

So far (about 2 weeks of burning) I think I like the new stuff better!

I think it burns hotter, I'm keeping my draft closed more. I prefer the this white ash, it crunches up easier than the old red ash, easier to shake. I'm getting nice long burn times (but haven't really challenged it with super cold days) I still don't think I will have any problems tending to it twice a day. There are a normal amount of fines in it, nothing that bothers me, and about the same as others I've used.

Only difference in my stove is I redid the cement liner. Old one was beat up and cracked. I don't think that will change the burn at all.

At a minimum I'm just as pleased with this coal as the UAE.

I burned Mallard 2nd half of last season. It worked well. I still have 750#'s at the bottom first of 3 coal tubs in the basement.

I just topped off with coal from DiRenzo. Honestly can't tell the two apart. DiRenzo is 15mins closer for me so I save some time.

Well this is my first post but I wanted to give my review on this new malard coal. I burned through my first ton of rice and I haven't been very pleased with it at all. I have burned harmony coal for the last 5 years so maybe I was spoiled but this new coal just doesn't seem to be as good. "At least in my opinion" I have been getting alot of rock in my ashes and for the first time ever I had 2 full tubs of ashes in one week. I usually only have 1-1-1/4 tubs a week. The other issue I had is the strong sulfur smell that even my neighbor commented on. I have read some positive reviews on this forum so I'm not sure if I just got a bad load or what but I'm definitely looking elsewhere for coal now.

Unfortunately, it went downhill for me and I am going elsewhere after years of loyalty to Harmony.

I also am not happy with the Mallard coal. I am burning through a lot more than normal. I am averaging 90 - 200# a day! I didn't buy from them directly. My local dealer who I bought from stated it was Mallard at 8.5% ash. Ash content is lower so that is nice although I have to empty my ash pan pretty much daily because I am burning so much more. Tonight, I scooped out almost a bucket from the hopper and added some bagged Centralia coal I got with my Koker when I bought it used. I will see what the difference is. With the Mallard, the stove front is only able to reach about 450* with the feed screw fully adjusted for maximum feed rate. We'll see how the Centralia compares.

I'm burning Mallard now. Burning hot, more ash than the old harmony but show me coal that doesn't. It's less ash than the Superior or Summit coal I was burning. Everyone is burning more coal this year. It's freakin cold!

It does seem to produce more flyash than I'm used to.

Mallard has been performing excellent through these single digit nights even with a stiff wind at times.Sure I am burning more coal than a 24-32 degree night but right now it's 6* out side and 72 * in my living room. As stated everyone is burning significantly more coal with this artic air no matter what mine it came from.I expect if this cold conditions keep up to maybe burn 1-2 tons more than milder winters. But I understand it has been 20 degrees colder at night too.

I don't have stones in my ashes nor gobs of fines in my truck bed.I don't have excessive sulfur smells outside around the house or any other horrors I have just read.I do have more fly ash than I did with red ash coal. The overall amount of ash is expectedly more than the old UAE but the Mallards BTU's are outstanding. Sorry to hear some have problems but I am not experiencing any of that.

As I figured, my test of Mallard and Centralia usages showed I was using a lot more Mallard coal. We had 2 days of around 0* with some wind and I used 200# of Mallard and only 129# of the Centralia coal I have. I guess I need to change suppliers for the next 4 ton this year.

if you trust where your local dealer got the offending product by all means let him know your not happy.I would look for another brand of coal too if I was blowing through 200 lbs a day but I go right to the mine for my coal and for how cold it has been my usage is about what I would expect.

Good luck in your hunt and if you do find the real good stuff please post about it so I can get some too.
