Schrader wood stove

Schrader wood stove

PostBy: Carbon12 On: Sat Jul 13, 2013 9:09 am

Hi all! I came across a like new Schrader steel wood stove. It has a rotary air valve in the loading door. It has refractory brick around the burn box. It has a cast iron grate. It also has a shaker handle and a below grate ash pan. The removable, below grate ash pan has two rotary air controls. The manufacturer is out of business and I can't find any info online about this stove. It appears that it is a wood/coal combo stove. Does anyone know anything about this stove or have any thoughts as to its suitability to burn anthracite? Any and all info/comments greatly appreciated!

They went of Business in the eighties with many other stove companies but still run their operation as a fabricator I believe.
Give them a call and ask if they have any parts or info for Schrader stoves.

P.S. I don't think they made coal stoves.

Thanks dcrane. I'll have to give them a call. The web suggests they did make a "combo" stove. I just assumed that if a stove has under fire air vents, cast iron shaker grates and a firebrick lined burn chamber that it was set up to burn wood and coal.

That won't work very well for coal.

Poor seal on ash door, grate does not cover bottom completely, no banking plate in front, ineffective shaker for grate.

There are stoves that work for coal that are very cheap like Chubby, Penn, Crane, and Russo, so just get something better.

As said, a very bad anthracite stove's desing is to have a flat contour around the grate. Anth ash loves to build up on these flat non-moving surfaces and bring many troubles.
The best anth/coal stoves are made with no or near no flat contour around the grates.

Early literature shows this stove to be called .....The Schrader Kombie. It states the fuel is Coal or Wood. it is made of Boiler plate steel. Height 38" Width 20 1/2" Depth 31" heat capacity 1800-2000 sq ft. Firebox Double firebrick lined Weight 570 lbs. It goes on to list the Shrader Stoves of Penna in Harrisburg Pa 17109 Tel 717-657-1800. It is very old literature so you be the judge to dertrmine the practicality of burning coal. It looks like burning coal in what the picture shows would be"rough sledding" to me.You have plenty of time yet to make your plan for the coming weather. Mike
