On top of the stoker there is a ring of metal mounted on two brackets, the linkage that runs from the first bracket to the stoker gearing moves back and forth. By slowing moving that assembly back for forth, it keeps the ash knocked off the pot and prevents large clinkers from forming. The inside of this boiler is pretty compact, so I am guessing the designers added this feature to prevent clinkers from contacting the boiler surfaces.

Yes, that's the function. To shave the ashes off. They were a standard feature with the 400's. They also were available for the 600 and 800. Nobody really used them. The last two 400's that went thru here either had them disabled or removed completely. This one will get taken apart and the linkage moved to the other side of the pot.

Here we are with a little bit of the POR-15 for primer and a little wire brushing to get the loose rust off.

Can the Van Wert boilers be ran on buck with just a short auger setup without combustion gasses finding their way back to the bin? I am limited on auger length as my boiler (efm350) is in the middle of the house (with the chimney) and don't want a long trip hazard sticking out into the basement. However, I would have liked to try buck sometime as I have heard good things.

Thanks,
Joe

There are no gas problems with the Van Werts and short augers. Typically, the barrel is right next to the boiler. :)

Started breaking down the stoker today. The shaker arm needs to be switched to the other side and the auger needs to change direction also. Looking at the machine from the front, the auger presently comes out the right side. I'm changing it so it will come out the left side. A picture is attached that shows the parts involved.

IRC you may need a different casting to change direction on the feed tube (did not see the last picture you have the casting , make sure the shaft is good on that casting and the bronze bushings are good to )

as for the ash shaker if it was me i would just get rid of it now it nevered worked right from day one, and i could never get it to work right ....

and as for ash pans mine takes a #1 can't find them any place.

I get the Number 1's at the hardware store on the road from Frackville to Ashland. They are expensive. Usually in the $35 range. I want to monkey around with the ash shaker before I take it off. While the stoker is on the bench it will get the going over and if it doesn't work, bye bye.

Had a bit of a holdup because I wanted to take the transmission to Arnie at the A and B stoker shop in South Otselic, NY. He changed the seals out and pronounced it fit until it breaks. (Arnie humor) I like going there, it's a nice ride, nice country and Arnie is a real interesting guy. More interesting than most. He has all the parts needed to do just about anything to a Van Wert. From 400's up to 4000's, right there in the shop. He also does a lot with the ash removal systems and has several within a half a minute ride that he shows off. Got it put together Friday night. Just needed to pick up a couple bolts to finish. Stainless steel. So here is a video showing off the unit running on a cart. It is quiet. Real quiet. You can hear the belt vibrating because the unit isn't supported very well. The belt isn't tight. The motor needs to swing down to tighten it up. Didn't think it needed pictures showing every step of the rebuild.

The JD green, well once again, that is my way of going green for the tree hugging crowd. Best green going! Hope you can tell how the stoker works by watching the video. Simple and built like a tank.
