Try more combustion air.

Update. I''m trying what PRengert has brought to the table on pins. Timer settings 2 groups of 7 pins with secondary blower wide open and air shutter 1/3 open. Feed rate yesterday was at 14 with coal ash looking much better and lighter.. Now I'll see if increasing or decreasing feed rate improves it any. Checking it before work since its been 12 hours to see if increase of 1 turn help or not.

Adjust the feed rate to meet your summer btu needs, adjust the air to get proper combustion, check the draft, and finally adjust the timer duration until the fire doesn't go out and the boiler doesn't overheat.

You could leave the feed rate at your winter setting if you want to keep it simple, but it could contribute to more unburned coal when the boiler just idles.

Rob no matter what position air shutter is set at, it doesn't change draft. Dwyer gauge is lucky to move at all, yes it's properly connected to hole is boiler door. Draft is .02 per keystoker requires. Feed rate is 12 turns and now have 3 groups of 5 pins on timer, only have 3 pins left to be able to add.

How long of a time does 5 pins provide?

Your draft might drop to almost nothing between the timer cycles.

16-20 secs for first pin and each additional pin is 15..That relates to my current setup to be approx 75 secs every 10 mins.....Boiler maintaining 180 for past 2 hours. Draft on idle is .01

Wiz,

I ran all summer two summers ago. 3 groups of five pins with good draft. 150-170 on the Triple. Adjusted the nut from there. Kept the fire line under two inches straight across the ramp. Took some messing around and only lost the fire with a power outage from a storm. I did not worry as much about the unburnt coal as to keeping the fire. But the unburnt was minimal and the ash was way up the ramp. Boiler is in the basement. Wife said it was too hot in the house. Did not run it during the summer last year or this year- still too hot in the house

Good draft makes everything easier.

Have you insulated the top of the boiler and the piping?

Yes, leaving timer alone, put feed rate down 1 turn and see what happens. If it goes out will increase 1 turn and done!

Make sure you have enough fire to keep up with your hot water demands.

I had to increase 1 turn this morning so now my hands are off until winter.

Feed rate 13 secondary blower 3\4 open air shutter 1 in open. Ash will crumble between fingers to power and some will have little unburnt inside .Here is pic of ash.
