Buying bulk coal from Cincinnati Bulk Terminals?

PostBy: jhoncho4x4 On: Thu Jul 18, 2013 4:52 am

Tried searching but only found one posting with very little info.
Has anybody ever purchased bulk coal from Cincinnati Bulk Terminals?
It is located adjacent to the Ohio river and receives it's coal from barges out of PA / WV. So I figure with those cheap transport methods, the prices should be better versus being trucked.
I am located in New Paris Ohio, so Cincinnati is an easy trip for me to pick up myself. My plan is to buy 5 tons at a time using my 30' 14,000 pound gooseneck trailer by adding some sides in the stake pockets. I got a F250 Ford Super Duty 7.3 diesel. 5 tons of coal + 4,500 pound trailer = take my time and drive like I got some sense. I will be able to run smooth interstate the whole trip. I got 2 teenage boys to unload it into an auger if it is sized right ;) .
Anybody got any info or insight into purchasing from a place like that?
Any info on the sizes available?
Minimum tonnage in order for them to sell to you?
Thanks

I prefer anthracite and will buy it from there if they offer it. If they only sell bituminous and the price is low enough, then I am thinking of getting an antique hot blast for the pole barn and experimenting with it to see if I can get the hang of burning it cleanly.
Mainly I was just looking for information on what they offer, prices and the procees of the average Joe trying to buy from them less than a semi load at a time. I have tried calling there a several times. The only person that answers is the scale operator. I tried asking her if they sell Anthracite and she had no idea what I was talking about. She said "I just weigh the trucks" and gave me two phone #'s for the guys that should know. But they never answer, maybe I am catching them at lunch or something.
I have found retail bagged anthracite for $300 a ton and loose bulk for $250 a ton out of Berne Indiana picked up. I am just curious if Cincinnati Bulk would be cheaper due to their barge transport methods and large quantities. It is difficult to find decent prices on anthracite this far west due to trucking costs. I wonder how far east on I-70 I would have to travel with truck and trailer to reach good coal country prices. The fuel cost of dead heading to reach it would probably make it prohibitive.

I think most of the coal on the Ohio is bit coal or coke for the steel smelters. I have bought coal from bramhi in Wellston Ohio there egg sized to softball sized $85/ton, stoker and lump $100/ton 7-4 mon-fri 7-12 on sat 740 384 6212 there egg size has a good bit of dust in it. I like Oxford Reclamation in New Lexington Ohio $75 a ton for lump you can hand pick it or they will load for you.

Those are some good prices and that would be a very reasonable drive for me straight down highway 35.
