I wondered why the previous owner had smeared oodles of RTV around the smoke pipe outlet on my Severn coal boiler. As I removed the RTV it became obvious that pieces were cracked, broken and missing where the 8" smoke cast iron smoke pipe assembly connects to the boiler. Some of the mounting studs are either broken or missing. Here is a pic of what I'm left with...

The piece in the upper left corner will be removed when I can get the nut that holds it freed up.
As you can see I'm left with an irregular opening and nothing really there to attach to.
The chimney flue opening is 7" and the chimney is 16" from the back of the boiler.
My first thought is to use something like this in the opening to transition to a 6" round pipe and use cement to fill any leftover gaps:

grind it all flat, take a 1/4 inch steel plate, cut a hole in the middle then weld a 7" (or w/e) steel ring to the plate as your adaptor for your existing flu pipe (cement & screw that plate to the back, done).

You have a little bit of a mess there. I would not use a galvinized air duct transition they are very thin an it would not last long. Would a flat plate with bolt holes and a flange for the smoke pipe to fit to work? You could have somthing made at a fabrication shop.

Well as a matter of fact carlherrnstein a plate will bolt up after all. After peeling away the gobs of silicone, what I thought were broken studs are bolts that can be replaced. A square head bolt slides into a slot as can be seen in this picture:

There are slots for four bolts so I should be able to get a plate with a flange for the smoke pipe fabricated.
