Detroit

After decades of being preyed upon and looted by conniving politicians and unions, Atlas finally shrugged and left. A harsh reality but a valuable lesson in the certain outcome of Liberal philosophy in the rest of our cities and federal government.

This happening is a good thing if it provides a wake up call.

And there ideal philosophy is merely rose coloured glasses and will always be. To watch the world economy, better yet N.A.F.T.A. shread the american economy to pieces and do nothing aboutit, except to pillage and rape the working masses is a crime and reminds me of a dictatorship. Mosselini did this to Italy in the late thirties and early forties and he was hung and stoned...nothing less for the thieves and sharks that were in charge of Detroit!

You guys dont get it! We just didnt spend enough and we let the evil businesses escape. We just need to control the whole world and they cant run anywhere. Sorta like not letting Boeing go to SC and build a non union plant.

When the feeding parasites overwhelm the host they feed off of. Both the host and the parasite dies. Witness the descent into the Neo-Dark Age that we are now entering.

Some say the 67 race riots had a big part in this mess. Many of the middle class moved out and stayed out taking the tax base with them. Plus all the obvious stuff.

Yes, that's their dream of final destruction when all become serfs in servitude to their vision of rule by an ignorant elite. Feudalism is coming full circle.

This destruction of Detroit is happening in my lifetime and has reminded me of the paintings of Thomas Cole on "The Course of Empire" http://web.sbu.edu/theology/bychkov/cole.html

The first painting and the last are ones in which nature is supreme. Of course nature was supreme in the form of aspects of human nature all through the rise and fall, the rise by enterprise, ability, and ingenuity and the fall by sloth, covetousness, and greed.

I was alive when Detroit reached its peak as first in wealth and might be alive to witness the return to nature which will always win out. The skeletons and bones of an industrial empire is a sad sight, the rot and decay of American ingenuity.

Ayn Rand virtually predicted the collapse of Detroit over 60 years ago, back when 'Motor City' had arguably the highest percentage of GDP per capita of any large American city, and no one else saw it coming. Her story of the collapse of the "Twentieth Century Motor Company" and the city it resided in was a highly accurate reflection of Detroit. Not bad for a book published in 1957. The book is titled "Atlas Shrugged".

Will America become Detroit? With 10,000 baby boomers retiring per day from now through 2030, where on earth will the money come from to pay for all of these retirements?

It's the same in many cities both large & small, they were tied to one industry for the most part if other businesses were close they were most likely tied to that industry as well. The cities never invested in infrastructure in good times same as the businesses just ran themselves into disrepair. Wages went up so some moved out a bit, blacks moved in & caused more white flight, tax revenue went down then businesses found it more lucrative to move instead of modernize, they were given incentives to move off shore. There are many areas all over the states in the same boat especially the rust belt, some will diversify & some won't, regardless a modernized industry can now produce more with far less so the employment will never return. Unless they cut the welfare system they will never get people off, why actually do some type of work that pays less than they make for doing nothing but threatening to riot?

The above quote was said by one of the evil characters in the book. The book stands in opposition to such thought. Better quotes (from among many hundreds) might include:

“Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplacable spark. In the hopeless swamps of the not quite, the not yet, and the not at all, do not let the hero in your soul perish and leave only frustration for the life you deserved, but never have been able to reach. The world you desire can be won, it exists, it is real, it is possible, it is yours.”
― Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged

“Happiness is a state of non-contradictory joy--a joy without penalty or guilt, a joy that does not clash with any of your values and does not work for your own destruction, not the joy of escaping from your mind, but of using your mind's fullest power, not the joy of faking reality, but of achieving values that are real, not the joy of a drunkard, but of a producer.”
― Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged

"When one acts on pity against justice, it is the good whom one punishes for the sake of the evil; when one saves the guilty from suffering, it is the innocent whom one forces to suffer."
-Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged

I've been watching over the course of my lifetime the exact same path being taken by Worcester, MA. Worcester used to be a HUGE manufacturing hub. This fact was rammed home one day when I found a Worcester Business Directory from 1968 while working my route several years ago. It was an inch-and-a-half thick, and contained THOUSANDS of businesses & factories making everything from guns to transmission parts to textiles. Every year another factory closes in Worcester ... and is replaced with a family dependent upon the state. Worcester's taxes are through the roof! People are moving out in droves, abandoned/foreclosed homes can be found on every single street, and for all that tax money, they can barely keep the roads plowed in winter. Driving my route, there were several roads I had to avoid - too dangerous. The city is on the exact same downward spiral. Gets worse every year.

Springfield, Southbridge, Holyoke, Lowell, Lawrence, New Bedford, Attleboro, Taunton, Boston, Dorchester, Fitchburg, Leominster, Framingham, Marlborough, and a few others I probably forgot are not too far behind.

Good one grumpy, that last part singing about Detroit sure didn't look like any part of the city. I think Mitt is still out of work maybe they should have tried him out first, the worse that could happen is they would sell to China + Mitt's usual commission. I think if they do find a way out fairly easily there will be many more to follow.

Should be easy Sam, just make those rich Detroiters pay their fair share. Why all the fuss, it's now a Liberal paradise? They control everything.
