Has our morphing from a Republic to a mixed Democracy lead to further morphing into an Oligarchy?

: a government in which a small group exercises control especially for corrupt and selfish purposes; also : a group exercising such control

It's very difficult to answer when the definition is so chock full of unwarranted assumptions.

All governments evolve toward oligarchy. Our founding fathers were oligarchs. The council of elders of primitive tribes were oligarchs.

Since it is universal and inevitable that leadership will devolve upon a small group doesn't it then become a natural law of governance?

If so, then this would be a prime reason to insist upon the smallest government possible. The kind the constitution intended.

Absolutely! The Constitution was an effort to put into workable form the distilled essence of the political poetry that was our Declaration. It is the Declaration that was and should be still the guiding principal that there are self evident truths in what constitutes the happy development of human beings. Ignore those truths and you have Detroit.

The key is to have rule by a small set of well defined and objective laws that apply equally to everyone, the same for which which strictly limit and define the scope and power of the elected and the appointed class. Also, to have the power vested in the elected class divided. We lost that division when Senators became elected rather than appointed by State Legislatures, robbing States of their say in the Federal Government. Ditto earlier and to just as high a degree when the North won the Civil War and States and their Citizens lost their ability to balance Federal power with State elected People power, being effectively stripped and denuded of the 10th Amendment, which was the first Amendment to be scrapped (this being the legacy of Abe Lincoln). Also it used to be the prerogative of each State to determine how its Electors chosen to elect the President were appointed, but now the people of each State vote for and determine the electors. States are mere figments and figureheads as a consequence of all of this, and the Oligarchy of Federalism has grown to terrifying proportions as a consequence. The last major blow came when currency fabrication and manipulation was vested in the Federal Reserve. That blow resulted in a Plutocracy that pulls the strings of the Oligarchy.

No argument from me. There seems to be this belief that people are interchangeable and must conform to the same pattern. That individuality and the freedom for that individual to develop are not important or of minor importance. Suppression of individuality whether of people or pets leads to psychic sickness not just to an individual but to the entire community.

This truth is self evident if you study our biological evolution or the collection of queer ducks and eccentrics who moved our technology and industry and civilization forward.Even Jefferson with his love of solitary scholarship and reticence to speak did not fit the ideal of political oratory of his day. He also left office broke.
