reading foundry and supply co. stove restored

PostBy: fifthg On: Sat Aug 10, 2013 4:19 pm

I just restored an old Reading Foundry and Supply Co. stove that has a water jacket.I wondered if I fire it up,can I do so without water in the jacket? I also am not sure if I should seal all the seams or if I can just let them alone, they don't appear to have been sealed before.I have included a few pictures, has anyone seen one like this before,Reading Foundry was in Reading,Pa.Nice little unit,I think. BTW,what size radiator or baseboard can I attach to this?

Firing up the stove with a water jacket and no water supply to it is a recipe for destruction of the water jacket.

This is a specialty stove made for a laundry. The flat top is for heating irons and the use for the water jacket should be self explanatory. This stove is not really for heating in the standard sense that we most often think of. It is for an industrial purpose, to heat water for washing and irons for pressing.

Great specialty stove! Lookie that firebrick (that'll hold the heat IN & UP!) as William says... made for heating the top and water jacket which I bet it does blazzzing good ;) .

That photo that appears to be all brick is a little deceiving.Actually,if you look at the previous photos, the cast copper or bronze water jacket section is above the fire brick section, you are looking down through the water jacket to the fire brick and grates below it.The water jacket is about a 2 1/2" wall thickness, hollowed out to heat water and the lower section has a cast iron construction with about 1" thick fire brick.I can't tell what for sure the water jacket is made of.Does anybody know what it would be?

I'd like to set this up in my scale house,as a conversation starter as much as anything, but will fire last from a Saturday at noon 'til Monday morning at 6:30? I do have a guy watching the EFM in the plant that could tend this stove also, but I was hoping to not burden him further. Is there a way to make this work?

still wondering if it is realistic to expect a fire to last 40 hrs.,unattended.Also,if I hook up a radiator or baseboard, must it be up grade from stove water outlet?
