There are actually multiple valid definitions of the term jihad. They include (among others) inner spiritual struggle, outer physical struggle, and (particularly to the Shiahs) struggle against those who do not believe in the Islamic God (Allah).

Thus (channeling Sting here) the answer to the question of "what is Jihad" is "it depends".

Might I suggest that the Arab Spring movement (originally called the Arab Spring of Democracy, until the mass media got a bit embarrassed by what they were actually observing) is precisely an example of Democracy in action. Collective "man" against collective "man", let the biggest and most powerful group (philosophy, religion, or whatever the cause ...) eventually win. This is the very essence of pure Democracy.

Assuming democracy means rule by the majority then this doesn't apply since the winning side will be the better armed or organized or both and not necessarily the majority. The rules of evolution fit better.

Good point. Sort of like the 1% ruling over the 99%,

Read a recent article that pointed out how much support was being given the military by local residents. It seems an Islamist government is not too popular with many.

A year or so ago when this first started I asked an Egyptian born man I know who came to this country legally what he thought of the uprising. He definitely was not optimistic and said time will tell. Seems he knew something the experts in our State Dept. did not.

Egypt is a westernized country. Would you want the Brotherhood to assume control?????? Hell no!!! I don't know where we are at in this thing. Obama is assuredly backing the Brotherhood, but this country(common folk) does not want that. Things are upside down and backwards.

I thought it was being replaced with Islam with its own set of myths and superstitions...like Christianity. Science is the pursuit of truth, it only conflicts with religion when religion clings to traditions that are based in faith. Like the earth is only 10 or 12 thousand years old and such things. Science is not in the game to disprove religion, but religion has no love of any truth but their own.

I was referring to religion in this country and the bad science that has become religion. The climate change fake science, fanatical political theory as well as economic grounded on wishful thinking. Faith based but called science. Where is the science of man?

Islam also suffers from a group that believes that the creator of the universe needs them to fulfill his wishes by destroying. Instead they destroy Islam. Where is science? Nowhere.

All the great religions attempt to fill that void and they all enjoin jihad among their followers which is the inner search and struggle to know oneself and overcome the petty desires and impulses that leads to the chaos so prevalent. To become one with divinity.

The Summa Theologia says; (I'm sure the spelling is wrong, It's been years) as Thomas Aquinas put it. The greatest good is to behold the Face of God after winnowing out all of the temporal carnality that is the base nature of Mankind and have nothing left but purity of spirit. Only then could the Peace of God be revealed to you. Thomas Aquinas is one of my favorite thinkers of the Ages. Many of our concepts of our selves and the western view of the world come from him and his apologia which reconciled Catholic Thought with Hellenic Philosophy, namely Aristotle. We all have a Divine purpose and a reason for being. People don't spend a lifetime of literary brilliance like that anymore.

Just beautiful and a reminder that there is more than some cute Sunday School stories if one cares to look.
