Fukushima: TEPCO to begin removing spent fuel rods soon

PostBy: lsayre On: Sun Aug 18, 2013 4:43 pm

Soon TEPCO hopes to begin removing something like 1,300 spent nuclear fuel rods from the Fukushima spent rods pool. The only problem is that they were each placed into the pool by a supercomputer that remembered their location to the N-th degree, and which also extracted them without allowing them to touch. Now there is no memory of where they are actually located, and no computer to assist in their removal. Those involved will be bombarded by radiation during the extraction process. And if they drop any of them or merely smack any of them together and they reach "critical mass" this could set off a chain reaction in the rods that as a result would apparently make Hiroshima and Nagasaki look like child's play. We should all say prayers for the welfare of those who will undertake this operation, and for their success during this undertaking.

but but but, O useless one has promised us that there is nothing to worry about. Chill out Larry so a few may die. A billion people here or there don't worry, Marthas Vineyard will be just fine. The West coast needed to be thinned out a bit. Obummer will be just as worried as when the Gulf was being poisoned.

This is a disaster in the making, wait it already is a disaster, we'll all be dead and this will still be an ongoing problem of which the world has never seen. Japan will become a wasteland some day in the future unless they come up with a plan to deal with this. So far there is no plan, three meltdowns, never thought that would happen, now they scratch there heads wondering what to do.

Here in the US the spent fuel pools are over loaded and what do they do, keep shoving more in them, some day it will happen here, oh wait it already did, but we got lucky.

Yep we have much the same type of reactors & store the rods on site so sooner or later maybe when they run out of space the reactor will be decommissioned & shut down. :shh: All those billions spent on Yucca Mountain never happened, makes one wonder where they moved Area 51, they finally did admit to that but nothing was going on there either. ;)

Seems like a job for Smitty, where ingenuity counts.

If it is any comfort we can remember the wise statement of a leading figure of the 20th century. "One death is a tragedy, one million is a statistic" Joseph Stalin.
