A Harvard Economist recently posed his theory that within 20 years as many as 75% of all colleges and universities will begin to go bankrupt, as online colleges and universities render them as extinct as dinosaurs. The first thing to go as universities feel the strain of competition from online education will be their sports progams.

This and the above sort of go together in an odd way. If something becomes uneconomic on its own due to the evolution of the economy, only the government has the endless printing press and endless taxing power to sustain such a dinosaur.

That and the fact that for everything the government does there is a good reason (the one we hear about) and a real reason (the one they keep secret).

Sounds more like a truth in education type of policy kinda like Sam's Club listing price per pound or unit. Some of the colleges are pricing more for the name instead of the quality of education received. Just because you pay more doesn't mean you get more for your buck. ;)

But universities are private or State run. Why should the Federal Government feel the need to step in and regulate prices? it is none of thier business.

Will there be another Executive Order?

What the Federal Government really needs to do is get out of the student loan business. Then university costs will fall to the natural level that the market can bare.

The idea that everyone should have a "right" to go to a university also needs to be abandoned. That is a communistic thought bar none.

I didn't see anything about regulating prices but rather just letting people where they are going to get a better educational opportunity for their buck. That is exactly why they are getting worried about the on line degrees, you really don't need all the fluff of sports teams which most of the big famous schools make tons of money from. It's the same with many going the first two years to a Community College & then transferring to a mainstream school, some of those two year schools have since begun offering a full four year degree. Then again if you only want the upper elite to be able to get a degree then you would want to see the demise of all scholarships for sports & affordable loans & grants for any lesser individuals. It kind of seems like the direction some want to go, jack up tuitions, limit & jack up interest on loans & keep grants for who one knows instead of who grades earn it.
Perhaps the pursuit of higher education makes one happy. There again it sounds more & more like some want an exclusionary right as to who is worthy of rights.

I'm all for jacking down tuition costs. Let the online universities compete, and get the government out of the student loan business, and universities will either go bankrupt in a hurry (as it seems they inevitably will do longer term anyway per the Harvard professor of economics) or come up with better pricing.

A 2 million dollar farm would make me happy. I think I should ask the government for a rediculously low internst rate loan of 2 million dollars so I can pursue my dream.

That will never fly because it makes sense.

From the article:
"The president's plan will also take down barriers that stand in the way of competition and innovation, particularly in the use of new technology, and shine a light on the most cutting-edge college practices for providing high value at low costs," the White House said in a statement."

All he has to do is get government out of the way because that is what free markets do, but of course he is smarter.

Sam here is my understanding of why higher education costs so much. These numbers are fake and are intended to show the concept.

University education costs $40,000 cash

Government loan at .01% annually

So if you pay for your collage with a 10 year loan then pay the loan off you pay $44,000 for your education and far more people are able to go to collage. Sounds good right?

Now the universities have a lot of students in many of there programs and sense there is a higher demand for there services they raise the price in response to the demand increase, the unfortunate result is that the cost goes up. So what is a government to do, they offer bigger loans. Then education costs go up to offset the larger loans, and this cycle continues until normal people like my cannot afford to go.

So my opinion it that the government either intentionally, or unintentionally caused this situation and any attempt the government makes to "fix" it will make it worse.

Once again Franco, before the one the cost of advanced ed. was like a trip to Wal-Mart. Ah, life is so simple when you just ignore what you want. We were totally debt free with flowers & bunny rabbits everywhere as well as butterflies, can't forget Love in the air & nothing but happy thoughts & then along comes a lib & a black one at that. :D

I did not think you noticed and remembered all that about the good old days. Where have all the bunny rabbits gone?
