Older EFM...

might have a chance to get an older EFM unit, not sure if furnance or boiler. Was new in late 50's I beleive, only one owner. The gentleman is on in his years 90 or so... plus theres something not right with it. what evers wrong, owner said company is no longer is in business (?????)was used past winter, hes going back to fuel oil unit... is it worth a low dollar value, or free if new installer is just gonna scrap it?
By company no longer in business I think he means where he originally purchased it. Isn't EFM still in business?

went and looked at the unit, its a AF150-1 furnance. 3/88 MFG date.

EFM is still in business. The value depends on several factors, including what's "not right" with it and whether it has been removed from the basement. If it was used last winter it highly likely to have value above scrap. Even if the furnace itself is shot the stoker should be worth something.

I guessed wrong as to when the man purchased it from prior conversatios with him at christmas time. Look at unit, and I misunderstood when he installed it, its built in 1988. Notin hard to figure out about that. need to get it out of his basement... like to remove blower, drive head....BUT... they're no coming off air tube to burn pot.... whats the secret? set screws out on blower flange.. been soaking with penetreant.....

If it doesn't come apart, can side panel in burn chamber be removed and remove assembled still that way? Also heres pic of holes, in back of heatalator chamber, jjust foward of where blower attaches to back of unit. metal is solid all around outer edges of area, so its still a repaiarable unit. No leakage signs anywheres else in unit.

Worst case scenario....new heat exchangers are available. Sometimes the pipes have to be removed with a torch. I also used a slide hammer, but usually the pipe was damaged.

Yes, you can remove the stoker as a whole.

PLENTY of PB Blaster for a few days....and a 'fire wrench' for tough bolts and nuts.

Got the blower/drive head off of air tube to pot. a little thinking and a few days of PB, and heat, and tapping around casting where tube goes in. Let it stand a day, used a 6" bearing plate to push head off tube. cut threaded rod in several lengths(3/8") longer each length(width of nut minus an 1/8" and switched to each longer rod as needed until blower head was loose enough to take off by hand. will be taking out of his basement this weekend, when out will do a few pics of burn chamber. Will be taking to a friends machine shop for a good cleaning up, and maybe a light blasting. will have to see about a soft/hard media, walnut shells or something so as to not reove any metal.

Burn pot looks pretty good to me...

got the main chamber out of basement, toook off base late for cabinet. heres a few pics. Undecided what to do with it. Its a3/88 build date, there is one rear section which needs a plate, rest is soild shape. i am entertaining the idea of selling the fire chamber/heatalator. Anyone interested PM me, and let me know.

It has the round baffle in the top, which is a good thing. Replacements are available.

Its fixed, and its on its way to a new home in upstate NY. Agcowvet ( Jacob) was in need and I told him a fair price with the repairs. Hope it lasts another 30 years for him. replaced rear panel, bottom panel and half of one side panel by cleanout openings, plus 2 new clean out tubes. Used .125" steel for new panels and tubes. Agcowvet needed clean out tubes off for clearance issues going into his basement. He said he will weld the new ones on once its situated down there.

Yep, it made the trip back up here just fine. Still strapped to the back of the truck, but under tarp now, awaiting its delivery into its new home in my basement. I'll be starting a new thread with pictures of that process later on. Thanks much!
