They are likely the result of people interfering with the natural process by feeding and taming them.

ck, I was watching a documentary about that area & the critters appear to be doing real well. Deer, wolves etc. The only problem they say their having is with the wolves eating a whole slew of beaver & a lot of the land is going back to wetland due to the lack of beaver dams
