Annual flu shots

Don't do it Fred, those junior biological terrorists carry germs that were previously unknown to man. Two weeks ago when we took our therapy dog to the kids reading program at the local library (yep, even in Linesville) a couple of those cute little rug rats had snot sleeves you wouldn't believe, my wife is still feeling the effects but I wasn't too bad. There is no protection from a grade school full of kids.

Hi Guys My .03

I stand in the corner of no flu shots. I have never gotten one but then. i am a younger person, Active, and here is comes... TRY TO EAT HEALTHY.

What you put into your body daily will most certainly affect your immune system and how healthy you generally are during cold/flu season. that is a fact... stay away from the Huge Qty of sugar's in your diet... eh enough of that. I'm not health nut either but I do believe in it.

Also am a fan of Viatamins/Airborne/Emergen-C type supplements.

I agree that as Jpete said, immunity is a system that is grown from exposure. The more exposure to virus the more immunity you build up over your lifetime. So hopefully you folks in your 60's getting your flu shots are in fact flu Free because you didn't get the flu shots most of your life! what a concept huh! People today who have gotten them every year. I just don't see how they will ever build up strong immunity to some of these things... oh well. The gov says we must so....

One last note. I have a 5 year old. when she was born and more so prior to that I did EXTENSIVE research on Vaccination. I am NOT saying do not Vaccinate but I am saying... why on earth would you EVER give a 1, 2, 3 year old child, 5 and 6 (and now as many as 8!!!!) strains of totaly different virus contaminents on the same day. TOTATLY CRAZY. I did NOT do this to my child. I simply spaced out the vaccines and you know what. she did NOT one time have any side effects or a reaction to any of them. It was WORK 5 years ago trying to buy the vaccines seperate so I could take them with me to her doctor at correct intervals. So yea. it was a pain in the butt. to the point that now I'm pretty sure you can't even get the seperated vaccines in some cases mainly due to demand and the drug companies not making them in batches like this anymore. And that is a direct result of Uncle Sam and the CDC saying Oh. at 3 months you need to have these 6 antibodies all in the same shot... Idiots... Its called VIRUS OVERLOAD for the IMMUNE SYSTEM.

At work I can do XYZ but maybe not all at the same time or day. No different for your VERY complex immune system. cut it some slack. it'll work if given a chance.

My take. Thanks.

Mark, as I understanding that the flu bugs if that's what we want to call them are constantly changing with different strains developing, the trick is to monitor these changes as best they can, isolate those strains & kill the active virus. That then becomes a dead virus strain that you get in the shot or nasal spray & your body recognizes it as a foreign substance & develops anti-bodies to combat the virus. Having a virus once in your life doesn't mean you will never get it again, I would much rather build anti-bodies from a dead virus than have a live virus & all the ill effects until hopefully your body builds enough anti-bodies to finally begin to fight it off a week or two later. Then again I may misunderstand the whole thing & in that case just ignore all the above. :?

That's the problem. You build anti bodies to fight off a dead virus. If you ever get hit with a full bore LIVE virus, it's going to knock you for a loop.

The "H" and "N" in the flu virus names refer to the points at which they attack your cells.

Influenza comes in : A, B and C. Those categories tell you a bit about how dangerous the viruses can be.

All told, there are subtypes of influenza A: from H1N1 to H9N16.

I respect your opinion and it is your choice to get the vaccine or not get it. I will say that I eat healthy, I do not consume processed foods, no white breads, no white rice, no "junk". Strictly a clean meat, tons of greens, and the occasional helping of brown rice or sweet potatoes. I also workout religiously, 7 days a week either with weights, running, or biking.

That being said, having 4 small children and spending 8 hours a day around 3000+ people in a confined space, I always get a flu shot. Never did as a kid. Just started 6 years ago when I turned 30. Didn't do it at 34 and the flu damn near killed me.

Unfortunately I have a congenital defect in my heart that has caused me to endure several heart surgeries, get a pacemaker and ICD implanted, and even die last August and get shocked back to life. My new doctor at the Cleveland Clinic performed a damn miracle and brought me back from heart failure to a heart ejection fraction of nearly 60%. He told me 2 things: DO NOT take fish oil and GET A FLU VACCINE. When a man who saves your life and is pretty much the smartest electrophysiologist in the world gives you advice, you tend to listen.

My children also all get their regular vaccines.

All things in moderation is a good thing to go by IMO. As my wife always says that from your first breath you only have so many heart beats & you never know how many that is. There have been many that do everything right & they are no longer here, better to enjoy the time we have during our stay. 8-)

RW.

Certainly Glad you are still "here" with us! One thing I neglected to mention that I meant to was there are certainly exceptions and anyone that has Medical Conditions by all means getting a flu shot probably makes great sense. I guess I was mainly talking to the person with no known Medical Concerns, eating right and takign care of themselves etc.

I'm with ya. By all means get that flu shot.

I certainly don't mean to sound ANTI flu shot. I just believe that under the right conditions your body will win and should win every time.

ON the other hand. I will certainly agree with San's last statement there. have had PLENTY of friends Die YOUNG to Cancer/Accidents/ Etc and that is just the cold hard truth of life. I really hate Cancer. It has taken some GREAT people from my life much too soon. As it has to plenty of other folks. Now i'm off topic... Take care.

@Rwalker why no fish oil? are you on blood thinners? I take fish oil every day

as far as that damb flu shot I got... I think im OK now (48 hours or so though of feeling a little extra tired with some funky side effects that resemble a non-severe flu like runny nose, head pressure, etc. (Im sure they are correct saying that a dead virus cant cause the flu... "It just causes the symptom's of a flu" toothy )

Either way... this will be my first and last im pretty sure of that, but I respect those who have no effects from them and wish to take them (hopefully theirs enough of you out their, that I don't have to get one because everyone else DID, Mahahaha.... now you know my master plan! :dancing: )

It's exercise! 60 mph down a winding highway in the dark, and we both know how great a motorcycle headlight is, with elk crossing signs everywhere gets the heart rate GOING! :D Oh, and once I only had my sunglasses and forgot my clear glasses, so I could see about 10' in front of me at best.

The Native Americans believed the same thing. I have often heard to look to the forest for the answer to longevity. The animals that run around all day long like chipmunks, squirrels, and birds tend to live for only a few years. The tree, on the other hand, lives for hundreds. Working out most likely wont prolong my life, maybe give me a couple extra years I wouldn't have had otherwise, but it makes me feel good. With 4 kids (3 boys) to keep up with, I have to stay in shape so I can continue to whoop them well into their teen years.

Anyone with a medical issue should protect themselves by all means necessary. Nothing worse then a heart patient dying of pneumonia because they thought it was just a chest cold...

Last appointment he said the latest studies are showing that fish oil can aggravate an underlying heart issue. No, not on blood thinners. Just took it for health reasons. He said the studies are significant enough that he stopped taking it and he doesn't even have a heart issue. He has recommended that all his patients go off of it and instead eat fish once or twice a week. Cant tell you exact studies, didn't ask. I see him again in November and will ask then.
