Case Steam Powered Tractor

Case Steam Powered Tractor

PostBy: Lightning On: Thu Sep 19, 2013 6:30 pm

This is my neighbors Case steam powered tractor. This thing is awesome! He fires it with bit coal. It weighs in at around 11 tons and is considered 50 horse power although he says it has more power than his 75 hp diesel tractor. He gave me a little tour of it and I snapped some pics and video of the whistle. It's quite an impressive machine!!

He said there is only about 9 of these tractors in existence. What really blew my mind was how quite it ran. All the fly wheels and moving parts are weighted so that its perfectly balanced. He rolled it forward and backwards a couple times while I was on it and it was so smooth and quiet. No vibration, no clanky parts slapping together. Just raw power under very controlled mechanical engineering. Nothing is electric on this tractor, everything is driven by the steam pressure, right down to the blower that revs up the fire. Its truly a work of genius! If I get another opportunity I'll get some more vid clips of it in motion :D

Lightning,

NYS Steam Engine club holds the Pageant of Steam in Canandagua NY every year. Was a few weeks back. They have many steam engines running and tools such as saw mills running of steam. Worth a trip. I believe you just missed the western, NY show in Alexander a couple weekends ago also. My great grandfather had a steam engine and did custom field work. The family has a working model of his engine. Wonderful machines from days gone by.

Lightning, ask your neighbor if he knows Willis Able, all those steamers are a fairly close knit bunch. Here's an old article about his collection, it's a shame the pics are in black & white, it doesn't do them justice. Willis quit his shows back in 01 & sold off some engines & kept some others, next time I'm down that way I'll have to stop. http://steamtraction.farmcollector.com/ ... z2fRQMyJMi It was always a great time going to & helping out at the shows, got a bit dirty but it was fun dirt. :)
