Hitzer 50-93 relight

Hitzer 50-93 relight

PostBy: coalnewbie On: Fri Sep 20, 2013 4:46 am

Got my Hitzer going during the 38F spell loved it filled the chute fill and it's VERY VERY controllable - love it. But... along came the supermild weather, I opened the doors/windows turned on the attic fan and yesterday PM I cried uncle the weather is too damned hot and shut it down. Besides the ignominy of being thrown out of the one match club so early in the game (but it is a brand new stove so do exemptions apply?), now I have a stove full of coal and I am allergic to emptying it all out and starting again so I need a relight procedure. So is it throw in and a mouse and pray, oxy/acetylene, C4? HELP.

Most importantly---ya don't need to fill that hopper which probably will give you a 3 to 4 day burn during our current weather silliness. Personally---I'd unfortunately, empty some of the coal, OR NOT-- what's my take on the weather for the next few days?????? Right now it's 46* supposed to hit damn near 80* today--tomorrow rain & damp-- now on to business at hand--I'd probably just throw some self light in there & take a Bernzomatic tank to her. Did you have her shut down completely??? Might be time for that shaker handle washer?????????????????? AND--do the old dollar bill test on doors & hopper door--make sure flap chain is on around 22 balls from loose end--she should idle down to damn near nothing if everything is in order. PS--NOPE--no exemptions & God don't do coal stoves--He DOES give us the common sense to figure it all out though:)

X2 with Fred. This adjusting the chain thing is wack-O , if the flapper closes completely then it is closed. If you couldn't idle the stove down to 100 - 120* then you best look for and air leak someplace. Check that slide in the ash pan door and make sure it is not loose, can be adjusted with the nut and knob, needs to be on the tight side so you need pressure to slide it. And as Fred said check all gaskets with the dollar bill all the way around all doors.
