ok I will inspect the inside of chimney when I get home today, thanks for everyones advice. so the brick not being weathered inside would suggest that the wasn't a fire place there???

Nope, just means it wasn't used. Maybe had a propane set up of sorts.

ok well I just contacted the old homeowner and he told me that there was never any type of fire place there. always has been a coal stove in place.. also spoke to the person who wants to install new stove, I advised him that new stove is 35 inches in height and I want the new stove straight into the chimney just with a t pipe for a baro damper. he advised that is alot more work for him to cut thru the brick and very dusty. he said wants to go up the wall and thru the drywall above the exposed brick, as he said there would be less brick and mortar to cut thru.

because that chimney is a strait shot up and the clean out is on the exterior its a "tell tail" that their was never a fireplace, shelf or damper just as suspected (be very thankful the previous owner did a great job on an inexpensive chimney because a lot of people use square hollow cement block with a stainless liner and it look like donkey dung compared to real brick and terra cotta liner).... but you can see why we wanted to just check the outside photo's ;) now refer back to our previous posts and move forward! best wishes and don't forget to post new pics when the new stove arrives :dancing:
