how far up chimney do i need a new croc for a bigger stove

PostBy: shoman70 On: Thu Sep 26, 2013 12:05 pm

i currently have a small franco-belge hand fed stove in place right now. the stove is to small to heat my 2100 square foot home.i am buying a new coal stove with a hopper. the stove is a ds 1600 stove. i was told that i need to move the croc up, as pic shows my current set up is very low on the wall, about 18-20 inches high.is there any way i can connect this bigger stove without drilling more holes into the chimney.someone came out to look at current set up and he told me that i would need a new croc up higher, he would have to go through the drywall, and he would need 20-40 new bricks to complete the job. need some help thanks. the new stove requires a 6 inch opening, the franco currently has a 5 inch opening. please see attached pictures. thanks

i was told that new croc would have to be at least 3-4 feet higher that current hook up.

the height of the new stove is 30 1/2 inches, so outlet would be about 25-28 inches high.

Im only guessing here....but looking at ur first pic...was you set up originally a fireplace that was blocked in...? that is a pretty low thimble hiegth.
...how much do you know about ur chimney?
..i personally dont like the "forty new brick" remark....are they planning on linteling something off first?

i just bought the home 2 months ago, don't know much about it. the thimble height on the current stove in the pic is located right in the middle of the stove. i dont believe there ever was a fireplace there tho not sure. so this guy is looking to go thru the sheet rock right above the exposed brick. from the floor to the top of exposed brick is about 5 feet tall.

i guess my question is. if my new stove is 32 inches where it hooks up to thimble, can i go straight into the chimney at this height. i have been told by others that is fine, and some people say you have to up up to 4 feet to connect. just confused here.

now im confused too....
i thought your thimble was at 20 inches or so.
if its high enough to go straight in then do so.
the only problem/debate would be damper location and cleaning

Current thimble is at 20 inches. New stove would tie in at 32 inches. Current hole will be patched up so if i drill new hole at 32 inches. Can i run straight into chimney?

yes you can do the same as your franco stove pipe is now. Before any cutting of brick, call DSM and ask exactly what the deminsions are for the new stove.
