my bulk coal has reddish orange ash?

PostBy: nuthcuntrynut On: Fri Oct 04, 2013 11:33 pm

I'm getting into my bulk coal now and the ash is allot different looking than blaschak ash, and a whole lot less ash too. owner that delivered claims 8-10%ash, blaschak was 15%. i like the fact it isn't soaking frigging wet either.
So if this bulk delivery came from Reading area what is reason for orange ash?
So 10% ash does that mean 90% carbon content?

The difference between white ash and red ash is the iron content of the coal. One is no better than then other unless the content gets high enough where you start forming clinkers. Then it's an inconvenience, not a show stopper.

sulfur content and volatile matter,as well as ash, must also be deducted to come up with total carbon. Each 6% ash equates to about 1000 BTU deduction from !5000 BTU per pound of coal,as a rule of thumb, but higher vol coal has more BTU,and less carbon ,therefore, than lower vol coal.Higher vol makes more heat, lower vol is better for metallurgical purposes.Don't worry about that, just buy properly prepared, blended coal.Don't believe anyone who says it should have a certtain amount of rock or slate to hold heat.I've said it before,if you want that, just buy clean coal and throw your own rock in for free :D

Thanks for the numbers, was wondering how it equates. I'm burning about twenty pounds a day, quite abit for idling requirements plus some for DHW for the house. I also noticed I"m having a bit of heat transfer(stratification) up to the second floor backfeeding thru the return line, heating one baseboard up there, need to install a flocheck on that return. I've noticed most folks burn around 15 lbs a day or so.

Recently I've drop coal usage from 22 to 15lbs a day by dropping high temp from 160 to 140 on 4006a that's strap onto oil boiler.

I prefer red ash in my stoker. Less fly ash. With my old hand fed I would kill for white ash, no clinkers. With the stoker the clinkers if any just slide off into the ash pan. Who would of thunk  Years ago I did this all by myself without anyone to talk to. I quite frankly just assumed the ash was what it was, and thought one type of ash was because of the brand :!: How stupid is that  32 years of experience comes from bad judgement.
