getting "antsy" ?

PostBy: joeq On: Sun Oct 06, 2013 5:44 pm

How many of you "part-time" coal burners (such as myself), are looking fwd to the burning season? Is there something wrong with me or what? I really should be frowning on constantly having to review the condition of the fire, emptying the ashpan a couple times a day, filling the hopper, scraping the grates once in a while. But then again, sometimes my wife and kids pitch in, and I guess it just gives me something to do in the cold weather. (Not that I don't have "any other" projects to tend to ;) .) But a couple of the biggest rewards are not listening to the girls complaining about the cold, and reduced fill-ups on the liquid tank.($) Unfortunately (unlike you Northerners) I'm quite a few weeks away from "burn-time", so I'll just have to keep busy doing something else. Now where is that "to-do" list?

I'm a coal junkie too  I gave my furnace a sexy name. I call her Ashley. Pretty soon we'll have a date night and I'll sip champagne while I lite her up. She is looking forward to being warm again.

On a more serious note, I like burning coal for the science involved. It's fun to watch the temp gauges and the mano while tweaking air controls to get the best burn, experimenting with different sizes and types of coals. It's like a science project to me and has become a winter time hobby :)

Indeed Bs :) I've been idling with the old HITZER for 2 weeks going through MAYBE 20 lbs. every 3 or 4 days--all dampers/vents closed up except for 2 5/16 holes I drilled in the back flap--keeps the damp out of this 250 yr old farm house-- supposed to hit the 30's tonight here on the hill

I am starting to feel the same since this will be my first time with coal, but honestly I have to admit I use to love the colder weather for splitting wood. It's going to be kind of boring this year ;) . Hey Fred, how long into the season can you idle your Hitzer that low? I am assuming you can only idle it that low by drilling the holes in the flap?

I think this is the latest in the year that I've fired up the Kodiak! But then this year was the latest I kept her running (into May).

Whenever the outside temp doesn't reach 70/50, I try to explain to my DW that the stove that costs pennies per day at this point needs to be used vs the dollars per day oil burner. The Kodiak idles forever at 100 degrees off the sides.

Windowstats work well, but I must admit the drone of fans IS annoying. It's met with frowns and final submission, and 2 days later she's warming her butt against it. (always a point of needless contention, and not a major arguement).

Hmmm, I'm thinking Thursday... :D

I let mine go out once already this season, it was chilly here about 2 weeks ago then bam big warm spell. This morning at about 4 am the presidential unit of the house decided she was chilly, up outta I charge like a bomb siren was goin off. Cup of coffee, a long nose lighter some charcoal and a old wooden chair and I was off. Nice red glow, looking like this is the start of my full time season. :)
