Wiring a two wire zone valve

Wiring a two wire zone valve

PostBy: JeepinPete On: Tue Oct 08, 2013 5:24 pm

Can someone clue me in here. I am using a hydronic distribution assembly for my system, and it has the option of 2 wire zone valves. I'd like to add these to system so that I can add a thermostat to each floor (three in total). I've wired up the Taco 3 wire valves before, but I am not certain how to get the boiler and the circulator to kick on with this type of valve. So before I do something stupid, I am asking for someone to point me in the right direction.

Pete, Taco makes a nice relay box that allows for 2-wire zone valves and circulator/stoker operation. You could do the same thing with a 24v power supply, thermostats, and relays, but that green Taco box on the wall is tough to beat for simplicity.

The 4 zone valve version of this Taco unit sure made my zone valve and circulator wiring job easy!

On the subject,

No control man here, but could he use zone valves with isolated end switches [end switch terminals on each zone valve run back to "TT" on circulator controller?

The 8124 triple 'stat on my boiler has "TT" terminals, jump those close the connection w/a thermostat of end switch from a zone valve and the pump and stoker run. I've seen those pricey zone valve controllers, but are they really needed?

He specifically asked about the two wire units. I have Honeywell's on my system that have an end switch, and I have it hooked up just like Dave said.

There are "2 wire" zone valves [2 wires, or, terminals]: 2 wires, operate the valve, nothing else. The valves that I mentioned are actually 4 wire, with 2 from an isolated end switch going to TT etc.

Afaik, there are 3 wire valves actually operate like those with 4 wires and an end switch. Those are usually wired with more than one circuit sharing a terminal. I have a bit of gray matter deficit, so I have a hard time understanding this, but.....

I'm about to wire up a 24v "3 wire" Taco and a 24v "4 wire" honeywell, both will have a pair going back to "TT". Wish me luck. LOL

Just adding my $0.02 here.

A few years ago I wired up two zone valves having two separate thermostats to my one furnace. I pretty much used the wiring diagram on the taco box to do this. My buddy insisted I need some type of controller to do this, however all I need was a transformer and a terminal board and my set up looks and works great.

Thanks guys, I suspected I was going to need another box. I am sure I could rig up something, but the install is actually looking pretty decent :D
