DSM 1400 installation clearances ?

DSM 1400 installation clearances ?

PostBy: KingCoal On: Sun Oct 13, 2013 1:18 pm

really didn't want to start a new thread for this since i asked in my other, but not getting any hits there.

if this gets answered and even if not it won't last long and take up much band width on the forum.

does any one have the published back and side clearances and or the front, back and side hearth extensions for the DSM 1400 ?

thanks,
steve

I don't have the specs. My 1300 throws a LOT of heat off the back. I have 32 inches clearance, and the wall gets very hot if I don't use a heat shield.

I checked Messick's Stoves website and nothing came up. They seem to have the best site for an Amish built product on the web. http://www.messickstove.com They do a nice job showing features and photos but no actual published operations literature. You may just have to sit on your hands 'till Monday,my Friend. Welcome to the Board, and I truly feel you made a great choice with DS....Bob

thanks all,

the Riteway put heat off the back too. i have been using stove boards held off the wall with pvc for years, does a great job of moving the heat out of there by pulling cooler air up from the floor and out the top where it drags the heat from in front along with it out into the room.

King,I see you've been using your head for something other than a hat-rack for a long time now ! The Classic-"If it burns, well,it throws heat !" saves the day. You're living in the home, you secure it's safety. Get DS's spec's,and build in your care and consideration. If somebody thinks it's over the top, then the hell with 'em ! I've always thought that if I've over-built to cover dementia letting me leave a door open and the stove goes red, well,we're covered. Carry on,Mister ! :blah:

I've got a 1400 DS Machine and the minimum clearances they on the back of my stove is,back:24" sides:36" flue:15" yes 15"not 18"
That is what is on the tag on the back of the stove. When I ordered mine, I had them too weld 5/16 nuts on the back corners so I could install my own heat shield. My flue comes out the top on mine also, don't have a hopper. The sides don't get as hot as the back I don't think.Hope this help's.

thank you very much hman.

that's some crazy huge spacing.

must be meant to coincide with the mythical 8 #'s of coal per sq. ft. of grate, per hour, burn rate and 80,000 btu output. LOL

i'll get along fine.

thanks again,
steve

EDIT

do you have any pics of your heat shield and install ?

just to relieve any concerns about having enough clearance, the Riteway listed 40" min. from back and non load end of stove with common 8" min. floor cover on sides and non load end and 18" at the load end.

i burned that stove in the current layout in this house for 15 yrs. with no problems, should be good to go.

thanks LDP that should be a good resource for all.

so....i grabbed some "fan fold " ( siding backer ) from work and made a 24 x24 foam box 35 high and did mock up positioning tonight.

it's going to be excellent. have to wait for the wife to get home from California tomorrow so i can start work on a new floor "board"

i have 2 workable shapes and layouts but will need to defer on coloring and texture.

has to fit in with the new decorating don't ya know LOL.

am also renewing my coal storage this yr. hope to use 1 c.y. poly tubs if i can find them salvage.

new wrinkle,

stove shop has my stove ready but, also called to say they just took in a 1 yr. old 1400 as a trade for a larger unit that could be had at a great savings.

now i have 2 stoves that i bought used and got a quarter century out of both. one the Riteway #37 and the other a Comforter Stove Works, from about the same era. so i know used isn't nec. a bad thing in it's self.

i'll have a NEW 1400 and the used one side by side for inspection later today, any extra attention points to cover or opinions on the used unit ?

thanks,
steve

If it was traded in on a larger one, that likely means that they were often over-firing it to keep warm. Look for warpage in the grates and in the doors.
