EFM WCB-24

Hello All!
First off just wanted to thank all of you who contributed to my post about the Harman Mark 2 stove. Lots of good info out there! Now another question...about 3 years ago I installed an EFM WCB-24 boiler in my cousins house. I piped it through the existing oil boiler with a plate exchanger and a dump zone in case the boiler over heats. He has burned wood in it since I hooked it up. He is considering burning coal in it to get longer run times. Before he makes the investment in a bin and tons of coal I was wondering what burn times people were getting out of theirs on coal and what size or mix of coal they were using. His house is roughly 2000sg ft and the boiler has no problem heating it on wood. It keeps about a 190* water temp all day but usually is out when he gets home. The boiler is still hot just no fire. Thanks for any info! Mike

Hi Mike, that boiler should have no problems burning 12-15 hrs with anthracite...nut size is what I would use. Most people shake the grates and add fresh coal on a 12 hour schedule. Get him a few bags of nut size coal to try...make sure he fills the firebox to the top of the firebrick. Many people try burning just a few inches of coal and the fire goes out.

He should have no problem getting 12 hours, even longer during mild temps outside. I can get 24 hour burn times with my hand fed furnace on an idle but recovery after a fresh load takes a little longer.

Thank you all for the info! Now that the nights are getting colder and the next few days are going to be cold we fired it up last night with nut coal and have been getting no problem with an overnight burn and it was still going when he came home from work. Thanks a lot!
