Just started the coal stove. The wife said the cold weather is coming so get it going. Glad she said it because it is going to take a day to remember the nuances of the stove. I just put stone and tile up where the stove sits and man does it look nice with the glow of the coal. Happy to oblige the wife.

Your wife must be looking at the same forecast I was looking at. Just enough chill in the air to get started.

Yep. The dampness makes it feel worse. I only plan on lighting one time again this year. So if we get a warm spell, the windows and doors will be open. My neighbor, who burns oil, asked me one time, how can you have your door open when its 35 degrees outside? I just get a grin on my face.

I have used 8 forty pound bags since Sept. 18. That's 10 pound per day or about 4,000 BTU per hour.

Here are some pictures. I still have to pour the pad the coal stove is going to rest on (spring) and put the oak trim around the tile to frame it in. This was a two car garage that I have slowly converted into a family room. The colors of paint, in case anyone wants to know, are a bluish gray on ceiling and very light tint green mist.

Looks great John, I love the stone work. What is the vent for.

Super looking install!

My first guess is that the vent is a source for some outside air to come in.

Thanks. Yes, the vent is for outside air. I couldn't find what I wanted so I bought 2 drier vents. On the inside one I drilled a hole through the flap and on slant I put in a screw and attached a little string. I can set the flap for how ever much air I want to come in. I don't have to worry to much about it when the temp is cold enough, but on warmer days I need it. I could open a window but if it rained the rain would come in. This works great.

That's awesome! I also converted a two car attached garage into a family room. We love our new living room! My coal furnace is in the basement but I've already informed the female unit that someday I want an antique base burner put in a corner lol your install looks fantastic partner!

Nice install. Like the dryer vent. Up here we would call that Yankee ingenuity. Enjoy, Matt.

Started our stove on October 23rd. I was tired of hearing the heat kick on in the early morning. Nothing like the warm and fuzzy feeling of a good ol' coal fire! Gotta keep the wife happy, she's due any day with our second little bundle of joy! Happy burning
