move ka-6 from the shop to the house?

PostBy: 331camaro On: Sun Oct 20, 2013 10:51 am

considering moving the boiler into my basement, gutting my oil system. looking for opinions, leaning toward doing this in the spring more than likely. since its probably not just a one weekend swap. i do have a newer clay tile chimney on the house. dont really use the oil since i got the keystoker. the oil tank is almost empty, perfect time to start taking it out lol.

Some cons that I've determine to be issue that made be decide shop vs basement.
1) Room for bin
2) Easy access to bin for delivery
3) Low basement ceiling, Constantly bent over to load and empty ash pan.
4) Wife  over dust
5) Summer uses for dhw would make basement hot and making AC cost higher to cool house.

in my case, my basement ceiling height is just fine, would make room for a bin thru basement window. really the only con i see is getting the ashes up the stairs.

i wonder how much more my radiant floor would run. i doubt id save any coal. just gain the room of the boiler, and not have to worry about blowing myself up

My Kaa-2 is in the basement. I turn on the Shop Vac when dumping 5 gallon pails of coal in hopper, and when emptying ashes. My coal storage is outside, in order to keep the black coal dust out. I have an exterior Bilco style door going to basement. Sometimes carrying buckets of coal down into the basement gets old. Same with carrying ashes out. Other than that, the whole set up works out very well. I'm very happy with it. No lost BTU's with boiler in basement. But, should the boiler idle in summer months, it does work against AC. I didn't feel any heat, just went through much more coal. Now I shut down in summer. Cap off boiler opennings. Close ball valves on primary loop, and put small cubicle heater in ash door, which also works very well. However, I'm thinking if I had a bigger boiler, in its own centrally located building, I would heat the shop as well. No carrying coal/ashes up & down cellar steps.

Thinking about doing the same this next summer. Ka6 running to keep oil boiler and 50 gal dhw storage up to temp used allot of coal.
