so much for opening morning

I only allow two hunters to hunt on me (A very long story as to why) but my second neighbor got a buck the other night. A nice 8 pointer, BUT it was nearing evening when he shot it, and it took off into the woods. They tracked the blood trail, but then lost it in the darkness. They got a tracking dog, but it too lost the trail. The next morning they found the deer but coyotes had already chewed most of the hind quarters off it, and the entrails of course. It was a total loss, but the Game Warden's made him tag it anyway, so he kept the head for mounting, but no meat.

What a bummer.

The scary thing is, where the deer died was within sight of my house, and withing a few feet of my sheep pasture. Despite aggressively hunting them (over 70 coyotes some years), they are still thick here.
