Just bought a home with a fisher coal bear stove in the basement. Anyone have information on how to use this stove?
I have used wood stoves but am clueless on coal. Is this a good stove?

You should post pictures of the stove both outside and the inside firepot, especially the grate system. There may be folk that know that specific stove, but most of us can talk to you about any stove if we know more of what it looks like in some detail - oh yea, also show pictures of the flue.Flacoal wrote:Just bought a home with a fisher coal bear stove in the basement. Looks like a clayton furnace firebox. First forget everything about wood. Start a good wood fire and when thats going good throw some coal on. When the coal starts to burn (you'll see the blue flames, blue ladies) fill up the firebox to top of bricks. Just make sure to keep a flame exposed to burn off the coal gas, while filling. Remember coal is alot slower than wood. Coal likes its air from underneath. Make sure you have the grate completely covered. You control the coal burn with the dampers on the ashpan door. You can have a little secondary air while you'll getting things going. Numerous threads and youtube videos on how to start a coal fire. I'm sure the seasoned veterans will chime in soon. Good luck and welcome to the wonderfull world of coal. Matt

The stove looks like it is in very nice shape. Do the grates move smoothly?
The firebox design is less than ideal, but it should work alright. You will probably need to get a steel poker if some kind to help dislodge and ash that gets stuck on the sides or the corners.
Is there a gasket on the ash door?

Thanks for the step by step! I will definitely search youtube too.
No gasket on the ash door or the firebox door either. I check with the local hardware store to get some.
What about "shaking the ash" , is that something I do often? Or just when I am kicking it back up in the morning?
Excuse the dumb questions, I grew up in florida and there wasnt any coal down there

No dumb question my friend, Just my .02 cents I shakedown each time I reload. I only shake until I see either a few glowing coals drop or a nice red glow from underneath. I like to open my ash pan door a minute or so before reload to get 'er good and rippen, DONT LEAVE UNATTENDED! Then I will shake with ash pan door closed until I feel a little resistence and then check ash pan which will either need to be emptied or raked down. Then throw some fresh coal on and leave for 14-16 hrs if not longer at timesFlacoal wrote:Thanks for the step by step! I
