The first part of that statement is true, and the second part untrue.
Needs fundamental to human nature are conceptual in nature and not to be misconstrued as material things as they are today. That's why rich people kill themselves too.
The idea that the strong lorded it over the weak in tribal societies is not borne out by what little we know of our own stone age Americans. Everything I have read of early contacts describe them as happy contented people with a sense of justice and their place in the world in many ways superior to our own.
