IS This Flame Too Close to the Hopper?

I cleared the grate off and let it run for a while to cool off. I thought maybe the air passage was clogged but I felt air blowing through the holes onto my hand. I'm thinking that I had my feed rate up too high since my bed was over 3" thick. I backed the pusher adjustment off two turns and have rekindled the koker. Hopefully this solves it.

the flame is about right on idle. MIne looks aobut the same.
Do you have a Thermostat or Coaltrol to control it?
Does it have a screw feed adjustment? how many turns OUT do you have it?
When you turn up the thermostat, does the stoker motor kick on steady?
It take quite a while for stokers to come up to temperature, maybe 30-60 mins, so you may not notice it right away, but it will eventually burn more towards the front of the grate when fully burning.

when cleaning the grates, UNDER the grates also needs to be cleaned. You can also take a small drill bit and push thru the holes to clear them out.
the TIMER pins are only for idle when there is NO demand for heat.

Ringer, here are where my pins are. I haven't touched them at all and I don't quite understand themRigar wrote:if the stoker is coming on then the feed rate is to low-

...3 inches thick is way to much..
what size coal are you burning?
I couldnt stack rice 3 inches high on mine if I wanted to.....it would slide down the grate

TIMER pins are 15 secs each and for IDLE ONLY. it keeps the fire burning when there is NO demand for heat. Typically don't need adjusted if you fire doesn't go out on idle.
They look to be set at 10 min intervals approx. so it runs the stoker for say 45 secs (3 pins) every 10 mins.

Ok thanks for clearing that up for me. I feel pretty dumb, this is all so new. I am burning rice coal. Supposedly the Koker will handle rice or buckwheat. I think I'll stick to the rice, seem to be easier to get and appears to be the same BTU's. Thanks again.

no problem. Hopefully the thermostat is working correctly. If you turn it up, do you hear the stove 'CLICK' on (stoker activated) and the stoker should remain running (on) until the thermostat is satisfied. which could take a while depending on how much you turn it up. Usually on a degree or two at time and let it catch up. it may overshoot and get quite warm at times. but it takes a bit to get a happy medium.
the flames do take a while to start burning farther down the grate when there is demand for heat. It definitely not instant heat like most gas/oil type furnaces.

...is the grate "clean"...and smooth?
free of rust ??
the coal should migrate easily down the grate....i ask because of how thick you claim the coal was. (3 inches deep)

The grate is clean, smooth and free of rust. When I was concerned about the flame being to close to the hopper, I kept turning up the feed rate thinking that it would push the flames further down the length of the grate. It didn't work that way. I must have turned it up 6-7 full revolutions of the stoker adjustment rod, I've backed it out 6 and will check in another hour.
The thermostat does work. I hear it click on and the stoker does move when the demand it warranted.
