Shaking late night disturb others?

Shaking late night disturb others?

PostBy: skobydog On: Sat Nov 09, 2013 8:49 pm

Newb

I have a question regarding shaking. I work second shift and if I were to preform 12 hour shakes one shake would have to occur at 1:00 AM or 2:00 AM. I have a tenant downstairs and think this would cause a disturbance each night.

Some thoughts I had were to go a bit larger on the stove so I wouldn't have to run it so I could go 15 hours without shaking (shaking coals at 2:30 PM and 15 hours later at 5:30 AM). I could just shake the coals at 1:00 AM when I get home while he's sleeping and tell him to suck it up. Anyone shake coals in the middle of the night and disturb household members? Is there a quiet way to shake coals?

stove make/model please? slicing is quiter in most cases... I'd talk to the tenant too, communication is key and if they are good tenant than you want them to know this is of utmost concern so work together to find the solution that works ;)

Single family home I live in. My kids and bride talk like it was ancient history when I would shake the old Buderus hand fed replaced 4 years ago. They said it was like fingernails on a chalk board. The new Keystoker 90 is soo much different. Who would of thunk

Well it turns the double wall stove pipe won't fit my Crane stove :(. It was too small for the space anyway.

I was looking at the following. Mark II, Mark III, Hitzer 30-95, and Hitzer 50-93.

I'm up at all hours. 2-3-4 am yeah funky work schedule. Anyway I haven't woke the wife or kids up yet. My stove has a pretty unforgiving grate system too. Pulverizes everything except rocks. I even run the shop vac to keep the ash dust from going to far while I sweep out the ashpan area. The cats and dog don't mind either. I think traffic would be more disturbing to your tenant. My two cents. Matt

That's good to hear.

Anyone with any thoughts on the stoves listed or any other stove that's forgiving with noise when shaking nut coal?

My Hitzer 50-93 being tended every 12 hrs--I do 4 to 6 quick, short shakes in the coldest weather & only a couple in weather like this just to show some red ash in the ash pan & I never woke the kids or anybody else that was around, the dogs even stopped getting up :) & the stove is right in the living area--

Right now I have 1/3 of the house "shut down". Three of the rooms are closed off so I'm heating appr 1,400 sq ft. If I had all the rooms open I'd be closer to 2200 sq ft. The house is post and beam with open floor plan and cathedral ceilings. Living room has an open ceiling to a loft/upstairs bedroom. The stove is on bottom floor (living room). (tenant is in the basement). I live in the northeast and it's not unusual to see single digits on occasion during the coldest days/nights.

Right now it's safe to say I'd be heating 1,400 to 1,600 sq ft but could be heating much more. Using the online BTU calculator I figure I could need anywhere from 70 - 100 K BTU.

With experience, of which I had none coal wise 5 yrs ago, the 50-93 can be tuned down to do the 1400--1600 open floor plan--cranked up, again with open floor plan--she would do you real well with 2200-- I could kill for an open floor plan in this 280 yr old broke up farm house ;) --how is the basement going to be heated--let's face it---heat only rises  toothy

Seems the Mark III or 50-93 would work. As far as heating the basement the tenant has a propane wall heater.
