Cleaning air filters for gas or oil furnace question.

Cleaning air filters for gas or oil furnace question.

PostBy: vegeta_ban On: Sun Nov 17, 2013 2:21 pm

Hello everyone,

Thank you in advance. I use the Honeywell 20 in X 25 in X 5 in air filters for my gas forced air furnace. They are about $35 to $40 each. Is it feasible to change the filter then using my air compressor to blow as much dust & dirt and what ever else it has collected then reuse it? Money is tight in this day and age of high gas prices, high food prices, high just about everything prices so I'm thinking I could get a few extra months of use out of them. I'm even thinking of spraying them with water, maybe even soapy water to drive out all the dirt, dust and other stuff out then rinsing them until clean water comes out then air compressing them dry. I know it won't be like a brand new filter but I was hoping I'm on to something here.

Thank you once again.

Be careful using compressed air or you'll blow a hole right through the media. Everything I read says to keep them perfectly dry. That is why they are normally shipped sealed in plastic. The folds make a perfect place to trap moisture and encourage mold growth. Good thoughts but not worth the risk to people that will be breathing the air that comes from the filter after you clean it.

I use one in my cold air return. Sure beats buying new ones all the time. I wash it every two weeks. It gets pretty dirty so it must be helping, right? But I'm also sure it doesn't compare to one 5 inches thick either

A filter actually becomes better and more effective as the filter loads with dust. Visually inspect your filter until you get to the point where the airflow has been cut down enough to need a filter change. Look for Filters with a Merv rating. The higher the number the better the filter. Washable filters are NOT Merv rated!

Working on commercial buildings HVAC systems, I usually find washable air filters on the fresh air inlet which are exposed to the elements. The Merv rated filters are usually found in the inside of the unit or in the air handlers. They are actually using one as a primary filter (good) and the other as a secondary filter (better). For a home I would recommend using the Merv disposable filters over the washable ones.
